Christopher Reischl Obituary

Reischl, Christopher Gareth Christopher Gareth Reischl of Chicago, 45, loving husband of Maria Reischl, nee Lopez, proud father of Nicole Reischl, cherished son of Dorothy Reischl, dear brother of Michael Reischl and generous friend to many, passed away Wednesday, May 04, 2011, of cancer. Born November 15, 1965, in Chicago, he began to show hints of the man he would become at an early age. His mother remembers him telling her at 8 years old, "Mom, you're like a piece of honey in my heart." His childhood friend Jeanne recalls him forming a neighborhood "gang" called the T-birds and cutting off the soles of his Chuck Taylors, so he could be barefoot and in shoes at the same time. That boyhood Chris is indistinguishable from the man he eventually became, always a leader and free-spirit, and neither time nor the indignities of life would change him. He was a 14-year veteran of the Chicago Fire Department who thrived on the excitement and camaraderie of the job. He is to be honored with the State of Illinois Firefighting Medal of Honor. A fearless and adventurous spirit from childhood, he wore many other hats in his personal and professional life: devious comedian and school bus driver; free-thinking philosopher and airplane mechanic; block party pirate and Alaska fisherman. In social settings, he was usually at the center of the action, whether he found it or it found him. He delighted in making others smile and laugh with stories he wove from his rich life and over-the-top contraptions he fabricated at his northwest Chicago home: adult-size tricycles, high-volume foam machines and a front-yard lazy river to name a few. Even as his health began to fail, he found time and strength to build a 20-foot pirate ship complete with mast, rigging and water cannons for his neighborhood block party. When reminded of his more practical home-improvement commitments, he asked one of his trademark rhetorical questions: "What do you think I want to be remembered as the guy who remodeled the kitchen, or the guy who built a pirate ship?" He is survived by his wife, daughter, mother, brother, nephews Daniel and Peter Reischl, and niece Amanda Reischl. He was preceded in death by his father, Broderick E. Reischl. Dear nephew to Trish and John Keith and cousin of Laurie and Sian Keith. A memorial to celebrate his life will be held on Sunday May 15th, 2011 between the hours of 1 and 5 p.m. at Aeree Loft 301 N. Justine Chicago, IL 60607. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Freedom From Religion Foundation (ffrf.org) or the American Civil Liberties Union (aclu.org). Better yet become an organ donor.

Maria & Nicole, Dot, Mike & families - I met Chris the first time when he was an infant & his Auntie Trish & I had come from Wales to Chicago as nurses (as had his mom, years prior). Dot & Rick were so v.delighted with their first lovely little son. The 2nd.time was in Cancun a few years ago, with his Chicago family & his British family. What a wonderful vacation, adventures & laughs. His death is a real tragedy for all. I'm so sorry, knowing his family's & friends' deep sadness. As a San Francisco firefighter widow, I can understand the dangers of his work. There is a Firefighters Cancer Prevention Foundation - we can hope that data & research will really prevent further terrible losses in the future. Heartfelt sympathy & prayers.

Warm condolences to the Reischel family for their great loss. While we did not know Chris for a long time, he was a pillar of our neighborhood. Chris made the Berteau Ave. block party memorable every year with the special projects he would do for the kids on the block. He will be sorely missed. Maria and Nicole, our deepest sympathies go out to both of you at this difficult time.

Chris was an absolute creative genius. His block party inventions and Halloween decorations will live in infamy. One of our first introductions to Chris's wild imagination was watching him spend much of one summer figuring out how to convert a shop vac and a bunch of tubes into a bubble machine that would hang from a tree and fill the entire street with bubbles. We are likely to be the only block party in the city that has a lazy river complete with canoes running down the middle of the street. And how about the pirate ship he built--accessorized with guns that sprayed water? Who besides Chris would have ever envisioned something like that?! And there are probably still kids (and adults) in the neighborhood who have nightmares from his elaborate Halloween spectacles--which people came from miles around to see.

There is a song that includes the lyrics "You'll be with me like a handprint on my heart." Chris has left his hand print on many hearts.
He was a true blessing to all who met him. His humor, his inventiveness, his genuine good-natured spirit--he was truly one in a billion. It was a pleasure to have known him.

And no doubt the block parties in heaven just got a whole heck of a lot more interesting. He's probably already working on convincing St. Peter that of course they can get the lazy river to defy gravity.

May the many fond memories of Chris bring comfort to his loved ones. We will all miss him terribly.
