Charlotte Westfall Obituary

Westfall, Charlotte Elizabeth Spengler Charlotte was born in 1918 in Denver, Colorado. She died June 19, 2011, at the Evanston Westminster Place. Preceding her in death were parents, Ida Louise Marie Fischer and Samuel Madison Spengler, Jr., and brother Samuel Madison Spengler. She earned her Bachelors degree at the University of Colorado. While there, Charlotte held many positions including president of the Alpha Phi sorority, president of Panhellenic, and was associate editor of the university paper. After marrying Ralph Libby Westfall in 1946, she raised three children, Janice, James, and Teresa. Charlotte taught many years at Noyes and Lincoln Elementary Schools in Evanston, Illinois, maintaining close teacher friends still. Charlotte and Ralph were married 65 years and never tired of travel, visiting over 90 countries. They always immersed themselves in the people and culture wherever they landed. Charlotte rarely missed a Northwestern University football or basketball game and strongly supported the Cubs, no matter how disappointing. Loving to play games, she was a great Bridge player and would beat Ralph at their nightly backgammon competitions. She was the perfect grandmother to five grandsons, Alexander and Kenneth (Janice and Andrew Levin) and Ryan, Robert, and Daniel (Teresa and Thomas Hutchinson). Countless hours were spent volunteering at Cook County Court Watchers, First Presbyterian soup kitchen, and at The Westminster Place. Charlotte was also actively involved in the Highland Garden Club, an investment club, Friends of American Writers, was co-president Northwestern University Circle, was a member of the N.U. Settlement House Board, and was on the women's board of the Presbyterian Home. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church for 60 years. Charlotte lived a strong and active life until the end and will be very missed by extended family. A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 25th at 3 pm at the Walker Chapel of the First Presbyterian Church of Evanston, 1427 Chicago Ave., Evanston, IL 60201. A reception will follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The American Cancer Society, 820 Davis St., Suite 400, Evanston, IL 60201. Info: 847/675-1990 or www.donnellanfuneral.com.

Dear Ralph and Family,
Seldom has a woman been such a strong model of quiet leadership and pure goodness. That was what we all learned and witnessed in dear Charlotte at Souper Saturday. She is already looking out for each of you, I know, and will continue to hold you in her care. Love, Ellie Davis

Charlotte was a wonderful friend and neighbor and served as a role model for all of us on Simpson & Ewing. We missed her when she moved but were always so happy to see her & Ralph in their new retirement life. Our sympathy goes to Ralph and the family-- Doris & Gary Brown
