Dear Liz, Daughters and Grandchildren: I wanted to give a short tribute to Charlie at the memorial, but the program was perfect without my adding to it. So, here are a few thoughts about Charlie, derived from 40 years of knowing him through IDOT, mostly when I was under his helpful wing. To me, Charlie was always able, accessible, accomplished, amusing, astute, benevolent, calm cool & collected, clever, competent, creative, dedicated, deft, deliberate, dependable, direct, efficient, entertaining, fair, friendly, funny, generous, helpful, honest, humble, humerous, innovative, kind, light, loyal, open, patient, patient, persistent, positive, practical, proactive, proficient, realistic, savvy, SCOTTISH, sincere, straight-forward, supportive, tactful, thoughtful, thrifty, trustworthy, urban & urbane, visionary, willing, wise, witty & not-too-serious. Also, I admired him as a husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, veteran, Chicagoan, farmer, engineer, manager, company man, colleague, listener, media-master, advisor, mentor, role model, best friend, & true public servant. We will miss him but his memory lives on for all who knew him! Thanks for all, Charlie!
