Charles William Maier Jr, age 97, died peacefully in Lincolnwood, Illinois on December 29, 2024. Born in Chicago in 1927 to Ella and Charles Maier Sr., Charlie or Chuck as friends and family called him, grew up in Lincoln Square and graduated from Amundsen High School. He was a veteran who served in World War II in Europe. After returning from the war, he went to work at the Chicago Sun-Times and ended his 24-year career there as head of the Art Department. He was a newspaperman at heart and read the paper every day until his passing. Charlie married Margaret Conway in 1952. They shared 69 wonderful years of marriage together until her death in 2022. They lived in Lincoln Square where they raised 7 children and were members of Queen of Angels parish and school. He was preceded in death by his wife Margaret and grandson Spencer Maier. Survivors include his sister, Joan Corrigan, his 7 children - Anthony (Edita), Nicholas (Heather), Charlotte (Louis Rosen), Patrick (Tina), Michael (Kimberly), Mary (Jesse Wilde) and Charles III (Mary); 17 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren. Visitation be held on Friday January 10, 2025, at St. Joseph Church, 1747 W. Lake St, Wilmette IL 60091 from 11:00 a.m. until time of Funeral Mass at 12:00 p.m. Interment Private. A larger Memorial Service and Celebration of Charlie's Life will be held in May 2025. Arrangements entrusted to Smith-Corcoran Funeral Home, Chicago, IL.
