Charles Horne Obituary

Horne, Charles (Charlie or Chuck) beloved teacher dies, 62, of Darien, Illinois passed away on December 21, 2010 at Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield IL. Charles was the loving father of Julie (Stephen) Faget and beloved grandfather of Andrew. His loving wife Jeanne preceded him in death. His sister Phyllis (Walter) Januk and sister-in law Katherine (Lester) Horne also preceded Charles in death. Mr. Horne was born on October 6, 1948. He grew up in suburban Bellwood and graduated from Proviso West High School in 1975. Charlie joined the Air Force after high school and proudly served in the Vietnam War. He then attended Northeastern Illinois University in Chicago and graduated with a history and education degree in. It was at college where Charles met and married his future wife, Jeanne Crampton. Charles became the beloved "Mr. Horne" when he began teaching at Indian Trail Junior High School in the mid-1970s. He taught at the Addison, Illinois school until the late 1990s, when his medical condition made it impossible to continue on the job. While working at Indian Trail, Mr. Horne became known for this passionate and humorous style of teaching. He was a vigorous advocate for students and their needs. He was a well respected by his students, staff, parents and his teaching peers. Charles had leadership roles in the school that included Department Chairmanships and work on Curriculum Committees. Mr. Horne was an inspiring mentor to both his students and his fellow teachers. Charlie was passionate about many things but his main passions were his family, teaching, reading, veteran's well being, and of course, his beloved Chicago White Sox. His many siblings, Jack Whitlock, Lester Horne, Kathleen (Brian) Hacker, Patricia Horne, Lori (Frank) Karli, and Carolyn (Jim) Roberts survive Mr. Horne. To honor Charles' wishes, no visitation or funeral will take place. There will be a memorial program in the near future, however, no date has been set. In lieu of flowers, donations in Charles' name can be sent to reputable Veteran's Assistance Groups or Educational Charities.

Mr. Horne was an incredible teacher and I feel grateful he was mine in 7th grade. Of all the teachers I have had, he was tops. He knew how to engage his students while still maintaining a high standard of education. If ever there was a man born to teach a confused lot of adolescents, it was Mr. Horne. I’m so sorry to hear now of his passing. I send my gratitude to his family for sharing Mr. Horne with all of us.

Mr. Horne's talent for teaching...a rarity these days...was unsurpassed. He commanded respect, but also made students of that "awkward age" feel important and validated.
Mr. Horne's humor and compassion have always been an inspiration to me as I parent my children. He supported me long after I left Indian Trail and I was always so grateful to him. Many of us owe our successes and accolades to this gifted teacher and friend. God Bless you, my friend.

I was just thinking about Mr. Horne the other day. I used to love listening to him teach social studies. In fact like many of you that have already posted, he is the reason I became a teacher. It saddened me greatly to learn of his passing. I was searching for him and found his obituary. Rest in peace Mr. Horne, you are missed by many.

Mr. Horne was the friend I needed when I didn't have one. I have thought of him for many years and ashamed that it took me so long to look him up. I wanted to say thanks. Since I can't tell him in person, I will pray that he hears me.

I was just listening to someone speak about a favorite teacher they had growing up and as they continued I couldn't help but think of my favorite teacher, Mr. Horne. So sad to hear of his passing. I truly wish I could have told him how much he meant to me.

I was his student in the early 90s. Besides all the funny/goofy things he would do that made you actually look forward to his class, he was the first teacher I can remember that spoke to you on a real level. Even when he threatened us with a surprise end of the year exam only to pop in Bill and Teds Excellent Adventure. I can't believe how much of that I class I still remember. He taught us about life through history and his own personal experiences. I'm glad to see so many other people feel the same way. Thanks so much!

I was a student teacher for Mr. Horne in 1992. I learned a lot about teaching from him and am grateful for having him for a mentor. I have been teaching now for 17 years and often think about his influence. I'm glad his White Sox won a World Series and he had many a good time at my expense since I am a Cubs fan.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of our Dear Mr. Horne... I had the priviledge of being one of his students in the early 80's at Indian Trail Jr High. During those awkward adolescent years, Mr. Horne had a way of leaving you feeling seen, heard, important and unique. I can only hope he knew the lasting impact he had on each and every student whose path he crossed. You were by far, my favorite teacher! You even gave me a nickname that I will never forget! Curly Top. Thank you for being you...

It is so easy to remember the not so good teachers from ones past. When you have one or two that are thought of with good memories, you know they had a possitive impact on many. You were a great, passionate teacher and I will miss you, but always remember you.

"Mr Horne...what a great guy: extremely witty and a major influence on my life at those critical "coming of age" years. Did he impact my life? I have thought history for the past 15 years and have taking the non-conventional approach to teaching that I observed in 1983-84...I hope to think that I've kept his style of teaching going strong (Jokes that make students groan...but smile on the inside) Greg Sherwin
