Charles Cross Obituary

Cross, Charles Basil age 79, of Michigan City, died Sunday, January 15 at The Arbors of Michigan City after a long illness. There will be a memorial service on Sunday, January 22, at 3 p.m. at Carlisle Funeral Home, 613 Washington St., Michigan City, IN. Visitation will be Saturday, January 21, from 3 to 7 p.m. and Sunday, from 1 to 3 p.m. at Carlisle Funeral Home. Mr. Cross was born December 24, 1926, in Minot, ND to George C. and Vera A. (Smithers) Cross, both whom are deceased. He is survived by nieces, nephews, friends from around the world, and a close group of intimates. Mr. Cross studied theatre at Northwestern University in Chicago graduating with friends Cloris Leachmann and Paul Lynde. He served in the military in the 1940's and then returned to Chicago to finish his education and to begin a career that lasted over 30 years with Marshall Field and Company. He began in the early 1960's as an assistant buyer and later became buyer of antiques and head of the fine furniture department. Mr. Cross traveled frequently to Europe to acquire antiques for Field's. He was also known for his yearly displays in the Trend House and for creating the Crossroads shop. Mr. Cross was highly regarded among antique buyers in America as being an authority on antique English furniture and accessories. Upon retirement, Basil returned to his first love, the theater. His involvement in the Dunes Summer Theatre showcased his acting, singing, and dancing talents as he performed, wrote and directed many musicals and reviews there. His love of art led him to a seat on the board of Directors at the Lubeznik Center in Michigan City, IN. A very active member and patron, Basil was instrumental in the dedication of a room at the center named after his lifelong partner, Bill Brincka. Over 40 years of hard work have made the beautiful gardens at his home a creation enjoyed by many and recognized by the Daylilly and Hosta Societies of America. His talents and love of life will be sadly missed. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Dunes Art Foundation, P.O. Box 384, Michigan City, IN, 46361

Basil at Fields and I at V.L.&A had a friendship over 50 years. We knew each other and Bill since our 20's. Many happy times at the farm and many lunches talking about family. I am so sorry that I didn't see him after he became ill because I had so much to tell him about. What a great summer at Michiana and seeing him at the Dunes Playhouse. We'll surely miss him.

Basil was like family to me. I was saddened to hear of his passing. I have many beautiful memories of Basil & Bill that span decades & have always been a source of comfort for me to recall. I will miss Basil's quick wit & sincere love & kindness. But I know we will all meet again one day. Selah.

Still using the dining room table we purchased 25 yrs ago. At the time we fwelt it was a little more then we could afford. However, Chuck was so commited to antiques that we couldn't resist..

When I read the obituary this morning my eyes welled up with tears, yet my heart rejoiced with laughter and smiles for all the wonderful memories I have of Basil during my work at Marshall Fields. A man of distinction, and class, yet so witty, creative and running as fast as speedy gonzalez. You were a class act Basil and now you will join all those other creative genius somewhere out there.

I am honored to have been able to know you. YOu will be missed
