Celeste Anglin Obituary

Anglin, Celeste Spencer

On February 8, 2021, while sleeping, Celeste made her peaceful transition at 98 years of age. Celeste was the ninth child born to the late Louis and Sadie Spencer, in Nottingham, Maryland. Celeste was educated in Prince George's County School System and graduated from Freedmen's Hospital Nursing School, now known as Howard University with a degree in Nursing. As a Second Lt. in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps, Celeste worked at the Brooke Army Medical Center, Fort Sam, Houston Texas and completed her basic military training in the Women Officers' Basic Course at Medical Field Service School. She reported for duty to the Army Medical Center, Washington, D.C. and served honorably from September 12, 1952 through June 2, 1954 during the Korean War. Celeste worked at the renowned Walter Reed Hospital and later became a Nurse Anesthetist. Her career spanned several decades working in the Operating Room at Columbus Hospital, Michael Reese, Jackson Park and Roseland Community Hospitals in Chicago. During her first marriage to Gerald Allen, she was blessed with a daughter, Adria Allen and during her second marriage to Frank Anglin, Jr. with a daughter, Irene and Frank, III. Celeste and Frank, Jr. participated in the Civil Rights Movement. Celeste participated in the March on Washington in 1963. Celeste was dedicated to her patients and loved her family and God. She was a great cook, enjoyed the opera and a great supporter of family, including extended family, particularly in their educational pursuits. Celeste will be greatly missed and is survived by her daughter, Irene Lyons Radford, and son-in-law, Jacoby Radford, her son, Frank Anglin, III, his fiancée, Valerie, and grandchildren, David Steele, Lauren Anglin, Sara Anglin, (their Mother, Mary Anglin) Daniel Lyons, and Faith Radford and a host of nieces, nephews and relatives.

I have wonderful memories of Celeste when I was an ophthalmology resident and she was my nurse anethetist. I was invited to her home, met her children, and spent many hours with her outiside of work. She was a wonderful personality and of great support to me at a difficult time in my life. I think of her often.

Irene

May you and the family have wonderful memories of a life well lived. May all of her work, love, strength and kindness speak for her and never be forgotten.
