Carolyn Handzel Obituary

Handzel, Carolyn J. (nee Polus) Born July 7, 1939 in Calumet City, IL. She passed away on July 4, 2016 after a brief illness. Carolyn is survived by Edward, her beloved husband of 52 years. They raised four daughters, Cathy Handzel (Eric Brungardt), Cindy (Jack) Conley, Chris (Rick) Pusateri, and Carrie (Billy) Worthington. She is survived by her sister, Cindy (late Carl) Remesnik. Proud Grandma Giggles to two grandchildren, Carly and Jared Conley, who loved her very much. Aunt to Mike (Tammy) Remesnik and Rob (Michelle) Remesnik. Carolyn attended Bishop Noll High School in Hammond and the American Academy of Art in Chicago. She earned a BA in Interior Design from Richmond Professional Institute, now VCU, and a BA in Fine Art from the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, VA. Her career began in the interior design studios at Marshall Field's in Chicago. While raising her girls, she owned Handzel's Design Galleries in Dolton and Glenwood, IL. For more than 20 years she helped add beauty and richness to the homes of thousands of clients. She was active in many organizations including BPW, Girl Scouts, and Chamber of Commerce. After retiring, she traveled historic areas from Virginia to California, and kept in close touch with a wide circle of loving friends and family. A memorial service will be held at a future date.
