When I attended Lane High School (1963-67), I had Carl Sambo for Modern World History. He was an outstanding instructor and one of my favorites. He challenged the students. We read a wide range of material and obtained a critical understanding and appreciation of modern history. I remember him fondly. He was the best.

He was my favorite teacher. I loved his sense of humor. He meant a lot to me/Greg/Lane Tech Class of 1985.

Mr. Sambo was a wonderful geography teacher at Schurz. That's a subject that's sorely neglected these days. He also was briefly the owner/manager of the historic Terminal Theater on Lawrence Avenue in Chicago. I remember, when I was his student at Schurz, I attended a slightly risque movie (Boys Night Out) at the Terminal. He was officiating at the entrance door when the movie let out. I didn't want him to see me, so I slipped out the loading dock doors. Memories - serious and comic.

Mr. Sambo was an inspiration to me during my years as a student at Lane. Later when I became a history teacher as well, I tried to copy his style of fun and humor in the classroom. If I impacted any of my students as much as Sambo impacted me, I will consider myself a sucess.

Mr Sambo was a great teacher, his wit, advise and life's lessons, are remembered often, by those of us who were in his classes. Not sure how much "history" was learned but his class was always one to look forward too. He will be missed.

Never will I forget the words of wisdom you have given me over the years. Those invaluable words of encouragement, friendship and love have given me much of the strength I possess today and have guided me on a path of success and self fulfillment thus far. I am very thankful for this. As I have told you in the past, you are a unique individual, and I am extremely glad to have known you. Your dear friend, Loukas

Mr. Sambo was one of the teachers a person remembers and thinks about in lifes hardest and best times. I can't say his teachings held much to contemporary history, but his lessons on life helped guide me to where I am today. To turn a cheek towards all the people who turn their nose down at you while keeping your eyes and heart open for the path they may attempt to block. I am still on my medical path because of him and will think of him in every life I make a little better. Being overseas at the moment stops me from being there, but my love goes out to the rest of the family, friends, and all the students who Carl helped along his way through this world.
I'll miss you Sambo but I'll always remember your kindness.
Oh ya...Thanks for the "honors" A!

Mr. Sambo was on his first teaching assignment at Schurz HS. It was a summer school assignment in 1961.
I was a student who loved History.
He led the way from the Revolution
through Civil War. I am sadden by his premature departure.
