I was telling my son about Mr. Myrent. I remember him fondly from a history class at Von Steuben in the late 1950´s. He had a profound effect on my life and education. I am writing this 15 years after his death and I looked up his obituary. I am very sorry for his loss. He was a great teacher and man. I remember him vividly. I will never forget him.

Mr. Myrent was a great friend to my mother, my sister, my cousins & myself; if it wasn't for him I'd still be in HS today I believe. I was so sorry to hear of his passing & I am sure he has met up with his great Tulane friends who preceeded him.

Mr. Myrent was my favorite and most memorable teacher when I was a student at Von Steuben High. I always looked forward to his U.S. History class with delight and anticipation. I am not surprised at the upward path he traveled in his career as a most remarkable teacher. Please accept my condolences to all of his family and friendships. with my regards and regrets, Sharon Litwin, class of January, 1959, Von Steuben.

As one of the Tulane kids, I was often told how this little guy commanded the respect (and fear) of students who both towered over him and outnumbered him. "They call him 'Myrent the Tyrant', my dad would say; no small amount of awe in his voice. I grew up only seeing his smile and hearing his kind words. Our parents counted him among their friends; to us he was Uncle Carl and will be missed.

Dear Myrent family,
My sincere condolences to a wonderful educator and friend while I had the opportunity to attend and graduate from Mather. I never told anyone except he and my late mom went to grammar school and Tuhley High school together so I was warned early to behave and learn and that I did. Thanks to a wonderful person whose passion for education taught us to aim for the sky even if we couldn't do it easily. You've lost a wonderful person and hope he stays in your hearts forever.

Mr. Myrent made us excited and want to do well--for him, because we cared about him.
I also remember his conflict about being an administrator to be able to earn enough money to take care of the family he loved and being a teacher which he also loved.
He was a wonderful man.

Every student particularly those who have graduated college have had a significant number of teachers during their school years. When you remember the name of some of them you know they were special. Such is the case with Mr. Myrent. I am now 65 years old and would not think of referring to him in any other way.

My sincere sympathy to the entire family. Mr. Myrent was a wonderful teacher and a very fair administrator. Those of us at Mather were very lucky to have him there. May his memory be for a blessing.

my sister was one of mr. myrent's students at von steuben. she used one of her "study periods" to work for him.
i was one of the students at mather who was in the first graduating class.
the first day of my class with him he recognized the last name and asked if i knew harriet, who was his student.
it was so nice to be associated with her, and that several years later he remembered her. he meant and still does mean much to me. as a teacher he ranks among the 2 or 3 who truly touched my mind and contributed to my own growth. my sister used to see him at the wilmette library and they both ejnoyed a small chat.
my deepest sympathies to his family. we all have lost one of the real menchen to travel on this planet.

I was an Assistant Manager of a health club for 11 years,
Mr. Myrent was a member of my club. After years of him sitting at my desk, eating my snacks, hugging me with a kiss on my forehead everyday, he became like a Grandfather to me. I was one of the few that was able to call him "Carl".
I will truly miss this wonderful man with many stories left untold. I used to tell him to write these stories down. Not only was Mr. Myrent my Principal, but later in life he became my friend. He earned a special place in my heart! With deepest sympathy to Slyvia and the Myrent family.

Dear Mrs. Myrent,
I was so saddened to hear that your beloved husband passed away. I feel so lucky to have been able to kibbitz with him during his visits to Dr. Kaplans office while my husband Bernie was getting chemo. I know he was trying hard to keep going as I told him about our 70th birthday party of my classmates this July and wanted both of you to attend. I also know how much love he had for you and his family as he told me many times how good you all were to him. Please accept my sincere condolences. He'll be missed by so many of my classmates from Von Steuben. Take care of yourself. Fondly, Joyce Insul Friedman

My memory of Mr. Myrent was by reputation, he was a "Tyrant".
I saw him daily walking the Mather halls, with a "Smile".
While attending Summer School ("63"), he came into my History Class. Stood with dignity, introduced himself, announced he was the Acting Principal. He spoke about his parents. They had five children. I thought he was a sensitive person, who in a subtle manner, commanded respect for being a Self Achiever. He was a man of Integrity.
My sincere condolences go to Mr. Myrents' Family.

I graduated from Mather in 1981. I was never in trouble, so Mr. Myrent never really knew me personally, but I was very excited to see him attend the Mather 50th anniversary party. Dear Myrent Family - What a loss for all of us who attended Von Steuben during his years there. Carl was my Division Teacher from June '52 to '56. We all respected and cared for him. I remember his Debbie and Glenn stories. His was always reaching out to all of his students. He made our 50th reunion so special by coming to our Fri. pizza party. I have many great photos of that night. The 'Class of Pride & Destiny' sends its deepest condolences.

My condolences to the family.
I was so sad to hear of Mr. Myrents passing. I graduated Von Steuben June 1959. I never had Mr. Myrent as a teacher but I worked in the "bookroom"
with him. He had a great sense of humor and the greatest smile. I never understood why his nickname was "Myrent the Tyrant"
He touched so many hearts and made a lasting impression on all. His spirit will live on through the many students that knew and loved him.

It was a sad day for me to hear of the passing of Mr. Myrent. As I (Mather Class of '76) was wont to travel under the radar, I don't recall having ever had to see Mr. Myrent for discipline issues. However, seeing him in the halls, always interacting with students and faculty, anyone could see the mutual respect that was shown. May his memory be for a blessing

My most sincere condolences to the Myrent family. My fondest memory of him was during my freshmen year at Mather North (the third floor of Boone School.)
It was a small class and occasionally he would join us for lunch. The conversations were always inspiring. He made me feel special and respected. It probably did not hurt that my mother would prepare an extra kosher sandwich for him.

I'm certain that he was a strong moral compass to so very many young people. I had the privilege of knowing him during my years (1959-62) at Mather High. We were the first June grads and I remember him as being the "go to" guy for the teachers and the students. I've never forgotten that "dimes are better than nickels" and that stature is earned and not automatically there because ones genes made one tall! He was a very big man! Sincere condolences.

I was a student at Mather in the 1960s. I never had contact with Mr. Myrent because I was well behaved. After graduating from college as a teacher, I was hired to teach Spanish at Mather while Mr.Myrent was acting principal. He was a model for school administrators. Like Mr. Myrent,I am 5 feet 2 inches tall and he taught me that a man doesn't have to be 6 feet tall to be a "big man". I have been a school principal in Chicago for the last 8 years and I credit my success to his influence. My sincere condolences on your loss.

Mr. Myrent was one of the seminal influences in my life, and a key reason that I became a teacher, and later a principal. I was in his World History class, at Von Steuben, back in 1953, and he made a comment that, for the first time in my young life, caused me to really THINK about what I was learning: We were discussing some war or other, and I said that I felt sorry for all of the innocent people killed, to which he responded, "In war, there are no innocent victims." I went home and thought about that, as I have over the ensuing decades. I wanted to be a teacher who got my students to really think about the meaning of what they were studying.
Jump forward to 1987, when we had our 30th Von reunion. I was on the planning committee, and recommended that we invite a former teacher, and all were in agreement--even those who did not have Mr. Myrent as a teacher--that it should be Mr. M., such was his enduring reputation. I was the MC at the reunion, and I thought that I'd introduce him with a bit of levity, so, referring to him as we lovingly did back in the day, I said, "Ladies and gentlemen, our honored guest for the evening, Mr. Carl Myrent, "Myrent the Tyrant!" At which moment, he gave me one of those sly "teacher looks" as if to say, "Bob, you couldn't say it then and you won't say it now." Everyone in the room burst out in laughter, and was my post-adolescent face red.
He was a scholar, a gentleman, fair in discipline, and a teacher of integrity. Our reunion group has been meeting about four times a year ever since 1987, and hardly a time goes by when his name is not fondly mentioned.

Page 6 i posted for Mr Myrant but i wanted to also mention that i was also in his office for one thing or another and it was as though i always had an extra class when you all went home which was '' penalties'' with Mr Pollick who was actually one of my favorate teachers. I had him for '' general music''. Mr Myrant saved me a lot when reaching for the phone to call my mom '' may she rest in peace'' at work to tell her about me. I also knew him as a person who really cared about people and especially the wellfare for students with the most up right respect. I had the chance to talk to him a few months ago on the phone and when i asked if he remembers me he said right away '' OH YES'' i had an excellent conversation with a great man who still had ALL his marbles. I am so sorry to hear about the passing of your beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, father-in-law, uncle and great-uncle. I had a great deal of admiration for "Mr. Myrent." Since I wasn't especially "naughty", we never had any "discipline issues" per se to contend with. However, as one of the leaders of Student Strike in 1970 and then a negotiator for students' "demands" with Dr. Heing and Mr. Myrent, we had an interaction on a whole different level. There was a great deal of mutual respect. It was very special seeing him at Mather's 50th birthday party. Sincerest condolences at this difficult time. May his memory be for a blessing.

To the Myrent Family,
I was so sorry to read of Mr. Myrent's passing. I am glad that he was able to be at the Mather 50th Birthday. I was always a little afraid of Mr. Myrent. Although I never got in trouble (maybe because I was afraid of him). I did meet with him when I was just starting my junior year, there was an issue with an english assignment and it offended my parents, Mr. Myrent made the teacher give a different assignment as he agreed with my parents. I always thought he really understood how to look at all sides of a situation and do the right thing for everyone. May your fond memories of him comfort you at this time. G-d bless. Dear Mr. Myrent: You were my World History teacher at Von Steuben High School and although I struggled to absorb the information that others seemed to get so easily, and although I probably should have failed your class, it was because you were willing to pass me with an F- with a Red Circle around it, a kind and memorable gesture on your part, that taught me to keep on trying, no matter how long and hard the journey, and for sure, I would never end up being a failure. You were one of just a few teachers at Von that inspired me to never, ever, ever give up, even when the going gets tough, and if I did, I would eventually become a success. You were right. Thank you Mr. Myrent for having a caring heart under that tough little cover, and may God grant you a peaceful rest. You have earned it. Job well done !!! GAIL MEDOW ROBINSON

It is with great sadness that we take note of the passing of this fine gentleman and educator, Carl Myrent. Mr. Myrent had a significant and positive influence on untold numbers of Mather High School students. That influence produced respect among Mather Alumni that only grew over the years as we progressed from students to adulthood. Mr. Myrent was indeed the star of the Mather at 50 celebration this past October. We are elated that he was able to attend, and as we read in Glenn Myrent’s heartwarming essay, that he enjoyed the evening. Being able to personally pay respects to him meant a great deal to many whose lives he touched.
We trust the Myrent family will know that Mr. Carl Myrent will be remembered fondly and respectfully by a great many in the Mather community. That you chose to suggest memorial contributions be made to the Mather High School Alumni Fund is but one more act of grace that will add to his legacy.
On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Mather High School Alumni Fund

My late husband, Sherwin Bulmash, had the good fortune of working with Carl in 1982 when he transferred from Harrison High School to Mather. He had the utmost respect for Mr. Myrent. Imagine how many young lives and minds he touched during that long, rewarding career!

Mr. Myrent, or rather Carl, lived next door ,for what seems like my whole life, as seen in the eyes of a kid. He was always there with a friendly smile and made sure to ask how was my day at school. Always busy doing something in the yard, but never too busy to ask if he can help. I am saddened to hear of his passing and extend my deepest heartfelt condolences to Sylvia, Glenn and Debra as well as other family and friends.

Mr. Myrent was a wonderful & fair person. He will be missed by many. I just saw him in October at the Mather reunion & he remembered me any many other students from 30 years ago & was so happy to see all of us. May he rest in peace.

Mr Myrent will always remain in my memory as a favorite teacher at Von Steuben High School. Even though I disliked history, I always looked forward to attending his classes. I remember seeing him at my class's 50th high school reunion. That was a special highlight for me to speak with him then.

Schools today could benefit from administrators like Mr Myrent. He was tough but fair.
