My deepest sympathies to the entire family.
I am reminded of this quote:
"One man has enthusiasm for 30 minutes, another for 30 days, but it is the man who has it for 30 years [or longer!] who makes a success of his life." (E. Butler, American Scientist)
Calvin never lost his enthusiasm or zest for the community, politics, the Democratic Organization and most importantly, his family.
I am the recipient of a number of books lovingly given by Calvin. I cherish them along with my memories of his generosity.
Peace to you all.
Written with love.

Dear Shelly -
I happened to be at a conference in Skokie today and came across the Skokie Review, which featured your father on the cover. I was sorry to read that he had just passed. I remember him from many years ago, as a true community leader and friend to many in the neighborhood. Seems like that never ended. What an inspiration to all. Sympathy to you and your families.

Sharon, Shelley, Edie, and Allen,
I just returned from Israel and learned of Cal's passing. Cal was a mentor and true friend and he had a major impact on my life. I was about to drop out of law school when I called Cal and he asked me to spend 2 days shadowing him. Cal convinced me to stay in school and without his caring and guidance my life would have certainly turned out very different.
My condolences to all of you.

I was so very sad to learn of Cal Sutker's passing. He was such a wonderful person, kind and good. He will be deeply missed by friends, family, and everyone who knew him. I'm glad I had the privilege of knowing this distinguished WWII veteran, father, brother, husband, and fine public servant.

Dear Sharon, Shelley, Edie, and Allen, deepest condolences to all of you and your families. Your mom and dad were beautiful people, that I was fortunate to know, and be distantly related to (my mother and Phylis 2nd cousins?), from a very young age, when we all lived n Hyde Park. I hope find comfort in your memories.

As a second year law student beginning in 1974 I interned for the Secretary of State under Cal's supervision when he was the Chief Hearing Office for that office. Watching Cal I observed a man who possessed great knowledge, wisdom, temperament and a great compassion for all those who appeared before him.
Those lessons have remained with me decades later. It will always be with fondness and gratitude that I will think of a man whose life touched so many in a positive way.

A man's greatness can be measured by his the legacy he leaves behind and Cal Sutker created no small legacy, both politically and with his family. A terrific man who made a difference.
