Mom,
I'm sorry I was a day late to visit your grave. I moved Tess into her dorm room yesterday 8/10/24. I can't believe it's been 15 years. Tess is a senior in college and ready to move into the grown-up portion of her life. We went to the Our Lady of Loretto Chapel together and talked to you, and about you. She told me a story about her last visit to your house and how you told her you'd always look out for her and that you loved her. I was shocked that she remembered but she did. She knows about you and all our family. She has been told and stills hears stories of you. We celebrate your life every year in at our Shannon family golf outing. You're loved and missed every day. May the Lord hold us all in the palm of his hand until we meet again.
Love you,
William

My mother kept a garden
A garden of the heart
She planted all the good things
That gave my life its start
She turned me to the sunshine
And encouraged me to dream
Fostering and nurturing
The seeds of self-esteem
And when the winds and rain came
She protected me enough
But not too much because she knew
I´d need to stand up strong and tough
Her constant good example
Always taught me right from wrong
Markers for my pathway
That will last a lifetime long
I am my mother´s garden
I am her legacy
And I hope today she feels the love
Reflected back from me.

Happy Mother´s Day to all the moms who plant a garden in the hearts of their children every day. I love you, mom!

Mom,
It's hard to believe I haven't seen or spoken to you in 13 years. The pages on the calendar keep on turning away. My dream of all dreams, and my hope of all hope, is only to tell you, and make sure you know, how much I love you and how much I always did. And yes, I know you loved me I could see it in your eyes, and I could see it your smile. And now my only chance to talk to you in through my prayers.
Now, I have to share news about Tess. I can see you in her eyes, and I can see you in her smile. She is a rising sophomore at Saint Mary's College at Notre Dame. You wouldn't believe how smart and beautiful she is. Tess has a very strong faith, and this year she will coordinate, plan, cantor, and sing, for the new Saint Mary's Sunday night rock and roll mass. She's a bit nervous about it but she is your granddaughter. She has your drive and strength. She's amazing. She will graduate in 2025 and then go on to get her master's degree from The University of Notre Dame. I wish you were here to share in her journey into adulthood.
Love and miss you Mom, William

Mom, I loaded a video of your beautiful granddaughter leading her choir in Rome at Christmas 2018. We were able to tour Rome and Florence with Tess and The Ursuline Academy Choir.....she sang for the Pope. She is an amazing young lady and I know how proud that you are of her and all of us. This was a choir of angels singing about our Lord and Savior. It was priceless. Love and missing you. William

" Saint Valentine's Day 2014"
I can not believe that five years ago today I returned home to Dallas from your 50th Wedding Anniversary celebration with a joy in my heart that we ( your children) had finally given you a gift you wanted. Dinner with your five children and our families, nothing more. Little did I know that would be the last time I would see the joy on your face and the love in your eyes that only a mother has. I had spoken to Maureen before I came in for the party and she asked me if I was going to say a few words to you and dad because she thought we would. I took on that task and have not stopped writing since then. So today Valentine's Day 2014 I am going to post for the world to see the toast I gave to you on that very special occasion. I hope you don't mind that I will know share those words for all the world to see.
TODAY IS FEBRUARY 7TH 2009,
THE DAY OF YOUR 50TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION,
WE, YOUR CHILDREN WOULD LIKE TO HONOR YOU BOTH, WITH THIS DEEP HEARTFELT TOKEN OF OUR APPRECIATION.
WITH YOUR LOVE, YOU CREATED US, AND WE WOULD LIKE TO SAY THANKS FROM THE FIVE, PAULINE, MAUREEN, ROBERT, WILLIAM, AND PATRICK, WE WILL ALL LOVE YOU FOR EVERMORE.
I GUESS WE SHOULD BEGIN AT THE VERY START, AND SHARE A FEW THOUGHTS WITH YOU, AND SHARE A FEW WORDS FROM OUR HEARTS.
WE, YOUR DAUGHTERS, ARE PROUD OF WHO WE ARE AND WHO WE'VE BECOME,
BECAUSE WE'VE HAD SUCH GREAT INSPIRATION,
YOUR LOVE HAS BEEN LIKE A BECON OF LIGHT, YOUR LOVE FOR EACH OTHER IS UNENDING, AND YOUR LOVE FOR US HAS KEPT ON SHINING BRIGHT.
WE, YOUR SONS, PROUDLY CARRY THE HAYES NAME, AND YES, WE CAN SEE THINGS DIFFRENTLY AS WE'VE GROWN,
YOU'VE PASSED ONTO US YOUR VERY BEST QUALITIES THAT WE CAN NOW SHARE WITH FAMILIES OF OUR OWN.
YOU'VE ALWAYS ASSURED US OF YOUR LOVE,
AND WE'VE ALWAYS KNOWN THAT WE'RE NEVER ALONE,
WE'RE SO GRATEFUL FOR ALL YOUR WONDERFUL KINDNESS, AND FOR ALL THE LOVE THAT YOU'VE SHOWN.
WE HOPE AND PRAY THAT WE CAN INSTIL IN OUR CHILDREN THE VALUES AND THE ETHICS THAT YOU IN US HAVE DONE, AND SHOW THEM ALL THE FAITH, LOVE, RESPECT AND STRENGTH, AND JUST LIKE YOU BE TO OUR CHILDREN, THEIR MORNING SUN.
YOU, MOM AND DAD, HAVE ALWAYS SHOWN YOUR LOVE FOR US, AND TAUGHT US TO BE THERE FOR EACH OTHER,
YOU'VE TAUGHT US ABOUT MORALS, SCRUPLES, AND VALUES,
WITH ALL THIS PUT TOGETHER, THERE IS REALLY NOTHING MISSING.
WE WERE ALL BROUGHT UP IN THE CATHOLIC FAITH, YOU'VE TAUGHT US THE MEANING OF FAITH, HOPE AND LOVE, THE WHY'S, THE WHAT'S, THE WHO'S AND THE HOW?
YOU ARE BOTH STILL OF SOUND MIND, BODY, AND LIMB, AND WE HAVE A LOT OF FAITH THAT YOU'LL GO ON FOREVER, BECAUSE YOU'VE PUT YOUR FAITH IN GOD.
WE, YOUR CHILDREN, AND GRANDCHILDREN, KNOW JUST HOW MUCH YOUR LOVE IS REALLY WORTH,
WE HAVE “GOLD BEYOND MEASURE”
WE HAVE YOUR LOVE, AND THAT IS THE GREATEST TREASURE ON EARTH.
YOU ARE THE MOST AWESOME, LOVING, CARING PARENTS, AND AS GRANDPARENTS, SIMPLY PUT, YOU ARE THE BEST,
IF LIFE EVER WAS TO BE AN EXAMINATION, WITH FLYING COLORS, YOU'VE VERY MUCH PASSED THE TEST.
WE COULD NEVER REPAY WHAT IT WOULD TAKE, BECAUSE THERE IS AN ENORMOUS DEBT THAT IS DUE,
SO HOPEFULLY OUR SINCERE THANKS WILL BE ENOUGH, A VERY BIG “THANK YOU” GO OUT TO THE BOTH OF YOU.
YOU ARE GREAT ROLE MODELS FOR THE WORLD,
YOU'VE SHOWN US HOW TO BE HUSBAND AND WIFE,
YOU'VE TAUGHT US SO MANY VALUABLE LESSONS,
ESPECIALLY, HOW TO KEEP LOVE IN YOUR LIFE.
WE DON'T GET TO CHOOSE OUR PARENTS,
AND PARENTS CAN'T CHOOSE HOW THEIR CHILDREN TURN OUT,
WE REALY BELIEVE WE GOT THE BEST END OF THE DEAL BECAUSE YOU'VE SHOWN US FIVE WHAT LOVE IS ALL ABOUT.
AND THERE IS ONE LAST THING WE WOULD LIKE TO SAY;
YOU'VE BEEN MUCH MORE THEN OUR PARENTS,
YOU'VE BEEN LIKE OUR LIFE LONG FRIENDS.
WE LOVE YOU WITH ALL OUR HEARTS,
WE HOPE THAT ONE DAY WE CAN BE WHO YOU ARE,
BECAUSE YOU'VE SHOWN US HOW TO TRAVEL THE DISTANCE,
AND THAT COULD BE FURTHER THEN THE FURTHEST STAR.
SO WE WOULD JUST LIKE TO WISH YOU A HAPPY 50TH ANNIVERSARY,
THAT'S REALLY WHAT THESE WORDS ARE FOR,
HERE'S TO YOU MOM, HERE'S TO YOU DAD, YOU'RE GOLDEN,
AND HERE'S TO AT LEAST ANOTHER 50 MORE.
WITH ALL OUR LOVE, PAULINE, MAUREEN, ROBERT, PARTICK, AND WILLIAM.
God Bless us all Mom.
Will you be my Valentine Today February 14th 2014?
Love from Earth to Heaven.
Your Big Guy.
William

Mom, I wanted you to know,
I remember our last Goodbye.
You started to speak, “Goodbye Willie”, “Goodbye Willie”, “I Love you Willie”, “Goodbye.” My tears washed away your words. I knew you wanted me to know …how much you loved me; those words didn't need to be spoken…. I knew, I knew,
I wanted you to know then, but the words didn't come.
I wanted you to know, how proud I am of who I am and of who I've become.
I wanted you to know, you are my inspiration,
I wanted you to know, your love is my beacon of light, it's unending and it is still shining bright,
I wanted you to know, you've passed on your very best qualities to me, your strength, your faith, your values, and your ethics, and that I am passing those on to Tess,
I wanted you to know, I miss our daily phone calls, your laughter and your fits of silliness that would leave me breathless,
I wanted you to know, your love was the greatest gift I ever received,
I wanted you to know, I could never repay you for what you have given to me, but I hope my writings will be a down payment on that debt,
I wanted you to know, when I go to mass today, I will light four candles for you,
I wanted you to know, I remember how you found the light, even in our darkest moment,
I wanted you to know, we will go on forever, because we have put our faith in God,
I wanted you to know, “Mom I Love you, and I always will”
Love,
William

Well mom, another one of your birthdays I can't spend with you. It's funny but, since you've been gone I keep track of time by the day you died and how old you would be. It's kind of hard but, if someone asks how long you retired I think in my head, "o.k. my mom died August 10, 2009 so I retired July 1, 2011 almost two years after she died. And for some forsaken reason it has become an important date on my calendar. So lets see you would have been 82 today. Happy Birthday. You're gone almost 4 years, pretty funny trick there Godiva. I wish you were here always. I wasn't through with you but, for some reason God thought I was. I wish he would have checked with me. Haha. Anyway mom, I love you forever and always. Happy Birthday. Love always, Queenie XXXXX

"Our Kitchen Table"
Our kitchen table was oh, so special,
those memories cannot fade!
I always knew when it was Easter at our house.
We dyed the eggs, hid the carrots, made the cakes, and watched The Ten Commandments on T.V..
We spoke of our Savior, and Heaven. Where you are gathered today, with our whole family.
What a gathering!
Today the church bells are ringing,
My daffodils and roses are blooming,
Easter at my house is still the same,
we dyed the eggs, hid the carrots, baked the cakes, and watched the Ten Commandments on T.V..
We speak of our Savior, Heaven, and You.
I am preparing to visit with you again today in God's House.
I'll wear my Sunday best!
I'll close my eyes and be reminded of you.
Today's delicious smells,
come from my kitchen.
We will gather at our kitchen table,
It is filled with you,
along with all the Love you have taught me.
The laughter you are hearing comes from our kitchen table.
It is mixed with the best noise of all,
Our families LOVE and Memories of You!
I close my eyes and whisper,
"Mom I love you, and I always will".
Happy Easter,
William

“And very early in the morning the first day of the week, they came unto the sepulcher at the rising of the sun.” Mark 16:2
I have seen one thousand and ninety five sunrises since you've gone
Today's sunrise will contradict the heavy heart that weighs me down
The birds are making their joyful sounds
The earth still moves
The sun shines warm upon my face
The dusk will come with fireflies
The stars will take their place in tonight's sky
I go to bed dreading the darkness
I awake to the new sunrise
It brings glorious blue skies and daffodils
The sun shines warm upon my face
I think of you
Your memory makes me smile ?
I close my eyes
And I whisper
“Mom I love you and I always will”
The Big Guy,

Precious Friend,
I just heard tale of your Birthday, I'm a day late. Maybe I would have been coming over to "cut your hair's" last week to ready you for a birthday celebration with your beautiful family.
The date that stands out in my mind is August 10th... the date you left us all. The very last time I was able to comb your hairs and spend some time with you.
Annie Mae Hayes you were a delight!!
These loving words from your children are such a testimony to you and their deep love and longing for you.

Hi mom, Happy Birthday. Well I'm sure you were with dad and me when we went to St. Joachim's for mass yesterday in honor of your birthday. It sure is a beautiful church and I pictured you as a young woman just over from Ireland living in the rectory and going to mass in the church. The statue of the Blessed Virgin that you prayed in front of on your wedding day was still there and I tried to picture the day. I felt you there and yet I still missed you. Happy Birthday my dear sweet mother. I love you with all my heart and wish we had more time together. Love, Maureen XXXXXXX OOOOOOO

"A Story to Tell"
Granna Mae,
You would have been so proud of your granddaughter this week. She is growing into a beautiful young lady right before my eyes.
This week was a big week for her. She had to face her fears; an over night weekend Girl Scout camping trip that was 100 miles from home, her first ever fast pitch softball game, and the lead in her 3rd grade school play.
I prayed to our Lord that he give her your strength. My prayers were answered.
Here is the letter that I wrote to her:
My dearest daughter,
I can't begin to tell you how proud I am of you.
This week should have proved to you that you have the courage and strength to overcome any obstacles.
You have a big heart and you make everyone around you feel loved.
You have touched so many lives without even knowing it.
You not only have been blessed with outer beauty, but you have also blessed with inner beauty, a beauty that is everlasting.
Nothing or nobody can ever take that away from you.
I am the luckiest father in the world.
I will always love you,
Daddy,
I hope you enjoyed the story Mom.
I know that you are here with us in spirit. I look for you every day.
Love your son,
William

Good Day Annie Girl,
Just another day to be ever so proud of your children. Will's words are so very beautiful, equal only to you dearest one. Days are so different without your laughter and humor.
I know you're smiling more with Aunt Pauline at your side. She too; a glowing roll model of a woman. Her strength astounding, like you precious friend.
You are remembered and loved always.

My Sunrise with Mom
By William H. Hayes
“And very early in the morning the first day of the week, they came unto the sepulcher at the rising of the sun.” Mark 16:2
I saw her in the sunrise on 8-10-11
I was awake then to greet the majesty of the day
The majesty of God
The majesty of You
What an amazing sight
My sunrise in heaven
I prayed into the light
I felt you there
I felt your warmth
I felt your touch
Her Heaven was so peaceful
So Serene, So full of her love,
Today’s sunrise was you, eternal you
In your everlasting majesty
Brightening my day, brightening my world
Then, the sun shone warm upon my face
And I knew God was holding us in the palm of his hand
Your Loving Son,
William

My Annie Girl,
It's getting close to the day, I can't believe it's been a year.
Life has certainly changed because you're no longer in it. However; we are all so very blessed because you were.
You... a glorious beautiful gift.
With a lilting brogue and beautiful sense of humor we had so much laughter that was good for the soul.
You're not here to laugh with us but the day will come in heaven when all of our Irish eyes will be smilin...again, when we lay them on you Annie Mae Hayes.
I love you always... til we meet again,

One Year and a Day
by: William H. Hayes
You asked me to mourn you one year and a day
still the pain of losing you hasn't gone away
I go about the things that I have to do
and as the hours pass I still think of you
I want to call you to just hear your voice
and then I remember that isn't a choice
For you are not here and still my heart cries
I'd like to see you once more to say our goodbye's
To say "Mom I love you and I always will"
And hope that much of you, in me you've instilled
The day that you left I just couldn't know
that where you were going I couldn't go
And now all my memories of you are so dear
but Mom how I miss you and wish you were here
Can you hear me now when I need to cry?
It's been so hard to just say "goodbye"
But someday I know all will be well
and I'll see you again with my stories to tell
of how you were missed and my life has grown
And how good it is to finally be home
Until then my memories of you I keep near
and I'll pass them on to those who are dear (Tess)
I miss you Mom and I can't wait to say "hey"
I did as you asked
"for one year and a day"
Love,
Your Son
William

My Dear Annie Mae,
I miss you so very much. I miss my times spent with you.... when you had so much interest in how I was doing. Like the Mother that you are, always loving.
Those of us who have loved you are so very blessed because we had you in our lives. I may have been brought into the Hayes fold by Pauline, however I soon had a strong beautiful kinship with you. You had it going on Annie Girl, our friendship knew no age.
I understand it was your birthday yesterday, did the family gather round and sing to ya in Heaven, the way we have in our hearts and the way we would have if you were still here with us? Happy Birthday Old Friend!!
I've wondered who's cutting your hairs now, or if it got thicker in heaven, I pray it did because I know that's what you would have wanted. Every 6 weeks since I knew you, that’s the 1st thing you would ask as I ran the comb through. Luci, did it get any thinner? I would say ‘No, Annie Mae it's fine’! Because, it was....... just fine.
You are celebrated here by so many, Grand Girl!
We will meet again,
Love You, Luci

Happy Birthday in Heaven Mom
From William:
She always leaned to watch for us,
Anxious if we were late,
In winter by our window,
In summer by our gate,
And though we mocked her tenderly,
Who had such foolish care?
The long way home would seem more safe,
Because she waited there,
Her thoughts were all so full of us,
She never could forget!
And so I know that where she is,
She must be watching yet,
Waiting until we come home to her,
Anxious if we are late,
Watching from Heaven's window,
Leaning on Heaven's gate.
Love,
The Big Guy

If roses grow in Heaven Lord please pick a bunch for me and place them in my mother's arms and tell her they're from me. Tell her I love her and miss her and when she turns to smile, place a kiss upon her cheek and hold her for awhile. Because remembering her is easy, I do it everyday but there's an ache within my heart that will never go away.
Love always,

Dear maureen and family,
An Irish Funeral Prayer
Death is nothing at all.
It does not count.
I have only slipped away into the next room.
Everything remains as it was.
The old life that we lived so fondly together is untouched, unchanged.
Whatever we were to each other, that we are still.
Call me by the old familiar name.
Speak of me in the easy way which you always used.
Put no sorrow in your tone.
Laugh as we always laughed at the little jokes that we enjoyed together.
Play, smile, think of me, pray for me.
Let my name be ever the household word that it always was.
Let it be spoken without effort
Life means all that it ever meant. It is the same as it ever was.
There is unbroken continuity.
Why should I be out of mind because I am out of sight?
I am but waiting for you, for an interval, somewhere very near, just around the corner.
All is well. Nothing is hurt; nothing is lost.
One brief moment and all will be as it was before.
How we shall laugh at the trouble of parting, when we meet again.

Many years ago I met a wonderful woman. She was kind and gracious and absolutely hysterical. She loved her family so very much. She was proud and true.
I’ve often thought of her and had hoped that one day I would meet her again and I would let her know
just how much I appreciated her back then. The respect and love that she showed not just to me, but to all the kids on Maplewood really left a mark on our lives.
To know her was to know love.
Rest in peace Mrs. Hayes.
God Bless,
with Love, Anne

Dear Hayes Family,
I am so sorry to hear of your loss. Your mother was a fine lady and a good neighbor. I will never forget the days on Maplewood sitting on the porch having a beer. It was fun in those days. One day we will all meet again and continue our friendship in a better place.
My love to all of you

Maureen,
I know how much you loved your Mother by the stories you used to tell. The one that sticks out the most is when you bought the house and you did not want your mom to know that it was so close to the "Gin Mill". I know you will miss her, God has called her to a better place. My Prayers are with you Mo and your family.

Dear Mom,
God sure knew what he was doing when he picked you to be my mother. You were the perfect mother for me. I loved the stories you told, the songs you sang, the games you played (Paddy the Duck), the prayers you taught us. I'll never forget the day you gave us the entire bowl of batter from the boiled Irish cake because we liked the batter better then the cake. You knew each one of us better then we knew ourselves and you gave each of us exactly what we needed to grow. I love you more then anyone in the world and I will miss you until the day I die. Thank you for loving me so much and for being the mother I needed.
XXX OOO
Love,
Maureen
