Amalendu Majumdar Obituary

Majumdar, Dr. Amalendu MD, FRCS, FACOG, FACS July 1, 1943 - August 7, 2015, of Glenview, IL, died in Budapest, Hungary on August 7, 2015, touring Eastern-Europe with an alumni Medical Group. Recipient of numerous professional and humanitarian awards and graduate of the prestigious University of Calcutta Medical College, Dr. Majumdar served 45 years+ as a premier OB/GYN surgeon with a flourishing private practice and as former chairman and current "House OB" of the OB/GYN department of Presence St. Mary of Nazareth and St. Elizabeth Hospital Centers in Chicago. A humanist, he strongly supported human rights equality for all races, religions/philosophies, cultures, and ethnicities. He is widely respected for his various contributions to charities within Chicagoland and around the world. He was the integral player in the realization of the philanthropic organization Bharat Sevashram Sangam, North America Midwest Chapter. Quietly intellectual, in his curiosity he accumulated an extensive breadth of knowledge about history, geography, world culture, current events, and world Classical music. His knowledge of Bengal's history and culture surpasses academics. His passion for mankind's diversity inspired him to travel to 66 different countries over six continents, captured in his love of photography. Tributes from his patients, colleagues, and well-wishers are pouring in since the unexpected news of his passing. Over 500 people attended his wake on August 16, 2015, at Colonial-Wojciechowski Funeral Home, 200 attended his funeral rites spanning the week ending with a literary tribute "Unmesh" in his honor on August 23, 2015, at Herrick Lake. Speakers paid tribute to his surgical prowess and his kind, soft-hearted nature - a man whose greatness and spirit of humanness knew no bounds. Born in Bengal in British India, he was the first of his family to migrate to the United States in the 1960s. A result of his sole generous sponsorship, there are now many generations of US citizens from several extended branches of his/his wife's family. He is survived by his loving wife, Purabi; daughters, Anonya and Aditee; and large extended family. The family would like to thank Vice Consul Mary Ermel and her staff at the US Embassy Budapest Hungary, and 7th District US Congressman Danny Davis, who were instrumental in helping a grieving daughter traverse a foreign land to bring her beloved father back home.

Dr. Majumdar delivered my son at St. Mary's in 2003,. I was referred to him because I had some unexpected complications in my pregnancy and was high risk. Due to the fact I was a practicing Jehovah's Witness I opted to see him because of his knowledge and use of bloodless techniques. Dr. Majumdar was never really a talker, quiet, but always compassionate and kind. I did loose a lot of blood during my delivery, however the Doctor knew what to do in order that I needed no blood. I am thankful for the role he played in my life and forever grateful for helping me bring my healthy son into this world. May God bless his family. His contribution to society lives on.

Doctor Majumdar was the best doctor you can have when your child is born.
Our daughter was born on December 31, 1999 in Saint Mary of Nazareth hospital in Chicago.
We were hoping to have him as her doctor when she will growing up. Unfortunately ,while looking for his practice in January of 2017, we have learned that he passed away.
Great memory about him will stay alive forever.Thank You Doctor !

11/24/15...Today i called into Dr. MAJAMDAR'S office only to get a new # . I called to schedule my appt and received the sad news. I was so distraught that i couldn't talk to the lady that answered the phone. He was so kind and personable. I traveled a nice distance to see him. He came highly recommended. I have been coming to him for years. I have friends whom he has delivered their grown children. He will truly be missed . Thanks to his family for sharing his time with us. My deep condolences to his family as well.

I had the good fortune of interacting with this quiet, reserved ,yet very sharp and knowledgeable gentleman. He had such a plethora of topics to discuss with supporting details. Above all,he was a very down to earth man, with not much of a pomp or show. Last October, there was a program hosted by him and his wife. I sang some songs and he came smiling to me, stating with a beatific smile ,that one of the songs was his favorite. I only pray to Almighty for his soul to rest in peace. May his loved ones muster up enough strength to make his fond memories their companion for the rest of their lives.......Regards,Ranajoy Ganguli
