Alphonse Szambaris Obituary

Szambaris, Alphonse Stanley At rest Friday, August 23rd, beloved husband of Marie (nee Popelka), dear father of Anne Crowe, Steven and Eric Szambaris, loving grandfather of Caitlin, Max Crowe and Sylvia Szambaris. Al was born on January 27, 1919, in Chicago and served his country in the U.S. Army Air Force from 1941 to 1945, including overseas service in Great Britian from 1942-1945 as an Ordinance and Bomb Disposal Specialist. Al sang as a soloist with the Armed Services Radio in Oaklahoma City and San Francisco from 1941-1945. Al was a Choir Member, Eucharistic Minister, Boy Scout Leader and Lector at St. Mary of Assumption Catholic Church in Chicago since 1955. He was a member of Teamsters Local #142 retiring in 1981. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated Tuesday, August 27, 2002, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary of Assumption Church, 310 E. 137th St., Chicago. Inurnment Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, Elwood, IL. I knew Al from when we first moved to Riverdale from Chicago and a nicer man I have not met.



I, for one, will miss him greatly, both as a friend and as a brother Knight.
