Alessandro Smeraldi Obituary

Alessandro Giovanni Smeraldi, MD age 52 of South Abington Township passed away on Sunday after a courageous and well-fought battle against colon cancer.

Alessandro was born in Queens, New York to Erika Smeraldi on October 2, 1972. Surviving are his wife Gail Bedell Smeraldi, a daughter Hayley and a son Caleb. He is also survived by his mother; two sisters, Silvia Fiumara and Teresa Smeraldi; sister-in-law Elaine Bedell; and his mother-in-law Sylvia Bedell.

Alessandro started his love for education and learning at St. Bernards School in NYC and then The Collegiate School for Boys in NYC (1986-1990). He then attended Swarthmore College from 1990-1994 where he decided to attend medical school and pursue being a physician.  He was educated at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx, NY from 1994-1998 and found his love of surgery and helping people with his hands.  He then did his 5-year surgical residency at Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, NJ where he met Gail Bedell who would later become his wife.  Alessandro finished his surgical expertise during a 2 year Vascular/Endovascular Surgical  fellowship at Staten Island University Hospital from 2002-2005.

Alessandro and Gail were married in 2002 and moved from New Jersey to Clarks Summit in 2005 where he started his almost 20-year career as vascular surgeon in Scranton.  Alessandro truly loved his job.  He went to work every day and enjoyed helping people by applying his knowledge and skill.  In the hours that he spent at CMC/GCMC he developed a large work family.  These people were truly part of his and our family.  The connections that he made as a surgeon with other medical professionals, as well as everyone in every part of the hospital, is why he was so loved. He gave his expertise and time to others and made everyone feel important. He spent hours at the bedside talking with patients, listening to their stories and just letting them know that they mattered.  Vascular surgery was his career, but not his life.

His best accomplishment in life was being a father to Hayley and Caleb.  He loved them like no one else.  He squeezed in every moment that he could when he wasn't at work to do things with them.  He read them books, he talked to them about things, they went to Target for "impulse buys", Mannings for a quick ice cream and was just all around the fun dad.   The connection that he had with them was like no other.  They will carry with them forever his amazing sense of humor, his love of adventure and constant yearning to learn new things.  He was so happy that he was able to see Skidmore as Hayley started her freshman year of college. He also taught Caleb how to drive during the time that he was home over these last few months and Alessandro cherished that time in the car with him.  He will be forever their guardian angel, guiding them through life and steering them towards the best choices.

Gail will forever be his greatest supporter, companion and best friend.  The two of them had many adventures during their almost 23 years of marriage and created an amazing family.  The trips to Cape May are by far some of the best times that they all spent together in their home away from home.  Gail will continue to be a great mother and support to Hayley and Caleb and constantly remind them of how much Alessandro loved them all.  They were a team and stared cancer in the face and laughed at it.

Alessandro’s family would like to thank the following: Dr. Tim Farrell and Dr. Jay Bannon for giving us a chance 4.5 years ago when you saved his life, Dr. Michael Kondash for caring for AGS and our whole family through the roller coaster of cancer, Dr. Namita Sharma for her care and expertise as she helped us navigate what was best for him, the cancer center staff at Geisinger who took amazing care of him every time he was there, Dr. Chris Peters for his unwavering love, friendship, support and guidance, always guiding us and offering his advice on the next potential treatment, Dr. Lauren Nicholls for helping us to be able to make decisions for our family, the vascular surgery team at Geisinger, the vascular and cath lab, as well as a multitude of people at Geisinger that were his work family for almost 20 years, but are too many to list. The family is also grateful for all of his colleagues at GCMC that supported him, lifted him, and encouraged him to be a better surgeon. He loved you all and I am sure that he has left a mark on GCMC.

In addition, we thank Gail’s “village”. You know who you are. I know you will be there when the times get tough to carry me through.

Friends and family may pay their respects on Wednesday from 3 pm to 7 pm at Lawrence E. Young Funeral Home and Cremation Services Inc., 418 South State Street, Clarks Summit. A private service will be held in the future at the convenience of the family.

Please remember to get your colonoscopy at age 45 or if you have any symptoms as it could save your life or someone else's that you love.  Spreading awareness for colon cancer will continue to be the mission of Alessandro, Gail, Hayley and Caleb.

I just found out about Dr. Smeraldi’s passing. I’ll always be grateful to this man because in January of 2018, he saved my life. I had a blood clot going towards my brain, but he stopped it in time. He was an excellent doctor and I will never forget what he did for me. May he rest in peace with the Heavenly Angels forever. God bless his family and loved ones always.

I just found out this heartbreaking news... Dr. Smeraldi saved my arm and more than likely my life. I had a blood clot in my upper arm (possibly on its way to my heart) and there was no one on staff in the ER to do a proper ultrasound. He came busting into the waiting room, brought me back and did it himself. I was immediately prepped for surgery as he was determined to make sure I was ok. He was such an amazing, caring, brilliant, attentive and soulful Doctor and I am so sad for his family and everyone who lost him. My condolences.

Dr. Smeraldi was my husband’s vascular surgeon. We heard about his recent passing when visiting the vascular office this morning at CMC. We met him in January 2023 when my husband was rushed to CMC. Dr. Smeraldi was one of several doctors who worked with us on getting my husband on the proper path of recovery. Dr. Smeraldi unfortunately had to amputate my husband’s leg in July 2023. As heartbreaking as that was, Dr. Smeraldi truly saved my husband’s life and prepared us as much as possible in the months leading up to his last surgery. Not only did Dr. Smeraldi save my husband’s life, but his bedside manner was incredible, not only with my husband, but with me as well. What doctor would worry about his patient’s wife’s wellbeing besides Dr. Smeraldi? We will always remember how amazing he was and always be thankful that my husband is still here.

I am not sure what words would describe the immense grief in Alessandro's loss.
I was one of his classmates in med school and what I always remember about him is his smile and how he always brightened the room when he casually strolled in the room with his backpack on his shoulder. Sending my thoughts, love, and a hug to family/friend.

Dear Gail, Hayley, and Caleb - I knew Alessandro (I knew him as Papi) from back when we went to St. Bernard's together. One of my great regrets is how our lives drifted apart after St. B's, as I considered Papi a wonderful person and a close friend. Seeing his photos here bring him instantly back into my life - he was so smart and so funny and so much fun. I'll be forever grateful I knew him when we were children and terribly sad I did not know him as an adult. I'm so sorry he died far too early and unfairly - he was a wonderful child and I'm sure he was a wonderful man.

I am truly sorry for your loss. Words cannot express how grateful I am to of had him as my vascular surgeon. He saved my leg then a few years later my life. He was my doctor for 16 years, and was a doctor like no other. When my health was at its worst he would personally call to check in on me. In my 55 years I have never had a doctor do that. I think that says a lot about his character. He will truly be missed.

I first met Dr Smeraldi on my vascular rotation. I remember his smile and just a joy for his job and life. I loved working with him and learned so much. Later when I became my own attending, he was there to lend a hand; no questions asked. I remember him telling me it would all work out and be alright any time there was something hard. He had a smile for everyone. And never seemed rushed or pressed for time if you spoke with him. I know he will surely be missed by all of those lucky enough to have known him. May his memory forever be a blessing.

Alessandro Smeraldi may have been the best person I ever worked with. His tremendous skills, both surgical and interpersonal, made him a blessing to work alongside every day. I will never forget his laughter, bringing cheer to all who came in contact with him. If he ever struggled, as we all do, it was never apparent. Indeed, even when he knew his diagnosis and the heavy toll that it would ultimately take, he would cheer me up during our occasional talks.

We will never forget the Christmas parties hosted in the beautiful home that he and Gail created, where Alessandro would lead us in Christmas Carole’s - assigning each of us one of the 12 days or desperately trying to get us to properly “sing the round“. The song-fest would end in laughter, and the team was always renewed.

I thought of Alessandro, And Gail, and Haley, and Caleb, as we sang “abide“ in church on Sunday:
When I passed through death as I enter rest
I depend on You, I depend on You
For eternal life to be raised with Christ
I depend on You, I depend on You

You’re the way, the truth, and the life
You’re the well that never runs dry
I’m the branch and You are the vine
Draw me close and teach me to abide

Alessandro, I miss you brother and hope to see you again, fully redeemed and restored, when we are reunited in heaven. God bless you, Russ.

It is with a heavy heart that I write these words, yet I feel so grateful for all the beautiful memories we shared. From our childhood adventures to our unforgettable journeys across the United States and Canada, every moment with Alessandro was filled with laughter, curiosity, and a love for life.

Papi, you were a shining example of positivity, humor, and generosity—always ready to embrace life with open arms and an open heart. Your warmth and empathy touched everyone around you, and your spirit will continue to inspire us.

The sadness is immense, but so is the love and the admiration we have all for you. My thoughts are with your beloved wife Gail, your wonderful children Hayley and Caleb, and your dear mother. May they find strength in the incredible person you were and in the love that surrounds them.

My deepest condolences to Dr. Smeraldi's wife and family. Although you don't know me personally, my family will never forget your husband. A few years ago he did emergency surgery on my special needs sister and basically saved her life. Her situation was very difficult, yet he not only provided her the most professional care he did so with concern and compassion. My sister almost didn't make it but I know in my heart Dr. Smeraldi did the absolute best for her. She will be celebrating her 68th birthday next week. Sometimes we don't get the opportunity to know the profound way someone has touched our lives, but I needed to share this with you. Your husband was obviously not only a skilled surgeon but also a very sincere and empathetic man. His memory will remain alive in the many people's lives he touched.

I am so sorry for your loss. The world has lost an excellent surgeon but most of all a remarkable person. Despite all the stresses in the OR , there was always that smile. I am so deeply saddened to learn of Dr Smeraldi’s passing. He operated on my husband and he was by far a very special
person and doctor. He took such a special interest in explaining every step of
the operation after he completed the procedure. He explained everything in such detail that u felt like his only patient.
My thoughts and prayers are with Gail and his children. He was so young and had many more years in helping patients
in the vascular field. May he rest in peace and no more suffering and look down upon his family and keep them safe
from harm. God bless you doctor!!
