Ada Stock Obituary

Stock, Ada Oschinsky

Ada Oschinsky Stock was born on March 2, 1920 in Breslau, Germany. She was the daughter of Erna and Albert Oschinsky, who had a textile business in Breslau. She was the beloved younger sister of her mischievous and doting older brother, Werner, and had a very happy childhood surrounded by family and friends who were to become lifelong partners in her amazing life journey. As Adolph Hitler and the Nazi party marched forward to destroy the lives of millions, Ada's parents, after Kristallnacht, arranged for Ada to flee Breslau in February of 1939, through a work program for German Jewish youth, to Great Britain. Alone for the first time, Ada worked initially as a housekeeper and later lived in a hostel for Jewish refugees in in Golders Green, London. She worked in an armament factory making bullets for the British army and sewing uniforms for the British troops during the Blitz of London, spending countless nights in air raid shelters during the bombings along with the brave Londoners. In 1948, Ada emigrated to New York with her beloved Scottish Terrier, Lucky, to begin her American journey. She lived in Washington Heights and used the sewing skills gleaned during the Blitz to work as a draper and seamstress for the fashion house of Hattie Carnegie. During this time, she was introduced by a childhood friend to another German refugee, Werner Stock, who was visiting relatives in New York but lived in Chicago. With the encouragement of several of her closest childhood friends who had settled in Hyde Park/South Shore, Ada moved to Chicago where she worked for Esquire magazine, lived in a boarding house and began a courtship with Werner, playing tennis at Rainbow Beach, walking at Promontory Point and reconnecting with her lifelong friends who truly became her family. Ada and Werner married in 1951 and settled in South Shore where their two children, Wendy and Peter, were born. The family relocated to Park Forest in 1959 where Ada got her little "dream" house and happily and simply raised her family. She loved her home, cooking, being involved in her children's activities and her ever expanding circle of neighbors and friends – her charisma was magnetic. She involved herself in community activities – the League of Women's Voters, the Jewish Council of Women where she volunteered for many years at the Ludeman Developmental Center, and later became the beloved nursery school teacher for several generations of south suburban kids at the Anita M. Stone JCC in Flossmoor, IL. Ada reveled in the achievements of her husband and children – and when Wendy married James Baird, the greatest happiness of her later years, her grandchildren, Andrew and Julia arrived. Ada and Werner spent countless hours delighting in every activity that they could with their grandchildren. After Werner's death, Ada moved back to her initial stomping grounds in Chicago – to Montgomery Place in Hyde Park, Chicago where she remained actively involved in the community and enjoyed new friendships and wonderful care of devoted caregivers, her children, son-in-law and grandchildren during her last years. She slipped away peacefully in the arms of Peter and Wendy on October 21 2020. She is survived by Peter Stock, Wendy Stock, James, Andrew and Julia Baird and her beloved niece, Anne Schaefer Kelly and family. To attend the funeral live stream, please visit our website. Dear Wendy, Peter and Family, Joe and I are just learning of dear Ada’s passing and want to express our admiration and fondness for her, our backyard neighbors for so many years. She was a positive, kind and giving lady, making the most of her time in her home and with your dad, and always with a cookie for our 3 children whenever we stopped by. She lived an amazing life, and we are thankful that she and your father were part of our lives as well.
We hope you are all faring well during this strange time.
Sending warmest regards, Joseph and Jane Addison

To Ada’s loved ones: In the 1980’s all three of our “boys” attended preschool at the JCC in Flossmoor. At least two of them were blessed to be in the classroom with Ada. Although technically Ada was an aide, To me she seemed to function as an additional teacher. We felt so fortunate to have her be a part of our childrens’ lives. Ada was a beautiful person — inside and out. May her memory be a blessing.

I would like to send my condolences to Wendy Stock and the Baird family that I had the good luck to meet at the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools. Julia was a delight as a student and her mother and father were outstanding Lab parents. Ada sounds like a wonderful person, and I'm sure you will miss her greatly. My heart goes out to your family.

Wendy, Peter, and family; I just heard of your mom’s passing and while I had not seen her in a very long time I often thought of her and your dad along with my dad, Harry, and Helga. I’m sorry for your loss, she led quite a long life and so many wonderful memories. My dad often spoke about her, I think they knew one another the longest of anyone else, both having come from Breslau.

All my best,

Mark Schrimmer

Ada was always joyful and smiling. Her eyes always sparkled. You had to smile when you were with her. Wendy and Peter I am so sorry for your loss and I know how incredibly lucky you were to have sweet Ada as your mother. Wonderful to know you were with her as she passed peacefully. She was so very special.

Ada Stock was our BackYard-Neighbor
in idyllic Park Forest where I had
my "Wonder Years"!
The Stocks house was directly behind our
in a subdivision of Park Forest
called Lincolnwood.
Not only did Peter and I attend Elementary School
and Jr. High School together (when he was a Guest at my Bar Mitzvah)
we also attended High School
together
where we both preformed in Plays together (Aurthur Millers the Crucible, amongst others)

Ada was my Mom's Avon Lady-too.

As a kid- I remember whenever Ada
called out- to-locate-her oldest daughter "Wendy"-
with her very strong German accent
it came out as "Randy" (my nickname) and
I would come running excitedly, only to discover-
Mrs. Stock wasn't calling me.

I've been blessed to keep in touch with Dr.Peter Stock
after all these years (I'm now 63.875 years)
as well as Wendy's husband-
an Architect , that I met randomly
at an Open House Chicago event where he'd volunteered.
I am so joy filled to hear of Ada's life story-
(Yelp reviewers deemed it The BEST WRITTEN OBITUARY- EVER!)
which- she NEVER revealed to me as a kid.

I know her love of "Mardi"- the Stocks black miniature Poodle,
as well as her & Werners passion
for Tennis kept her alive for as long a live, as she had.

May her Memory be for a Blessing.
Baruch-Hashem.

I was saddened to hear about Mrs. Stock. Of course, I remember her well, being at the Stock home in Park Forest. Her love for her family was very evident!

I did not know Ada. But this is the coolest obituary story I have ever read. Thank you to the family for sharing Ada’s story. RIP Ada.
