Wilma Hansen Obituary

Hansen, Wilma (nee Mullen) 73, daughter of William and Edmonia (Saffold) Mullen. Born in Chicago, Wilma attended elementary school in the Bronzeville and Park Manor neighborhoods. She graduated from Parker High School and began her studies at Chicago Teachers' College, now known as Chicago State University. She completed her undergraduate studies in 1971 at Loyola University Chicago and began a 25 year career as an award winning teacher with the Chicago Public Schools. In 1989 she won the prestigious Kate Maremont Foundation Dedicated Teacher Award from the Chicago Region P.T.A. In her early days of teaching, through mutual friends, she met a colleague who soon became the love of her life. Wilma and Robert (Bob) Hansen were married April 19, 1975. She and Bob have remained devoted to each other throughout their 38 year marriage. While they had no children of their own, the parental relationships they fostered with "Coach Bob's" team members and Wilma's students, positively changed the lives of many impressionable young people. They have also remained doting "Auntie Wilma" and "Uncle Bob" to a host of young cousins. Wilma was a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and Trinity United Church of Christ. Wilma is survived by her loving husband, Bob Hansen; cousins of the Kerr and Saffold families; and dear friends, Regina Hill and Millicent Porter. A memorial service is planned for Saturday, March 8, 2014 at the Alpha Kappa Alpha Community Service Center, located at 6220 S. Ingleside Ave. Chicago, IL. Visitation begins at 1:00 p.m. with the service following at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Wilma's memory to the American Heart Association or the AKArama Foundation of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Arrangements: Boone Funeral Service, 773-436-9052
