Robert Walsh Obituary

Walsh Jr., Robert E. "Bob" The family of Bob Walsh (Robert E. Walsh, Jr.) is saddened to share the news of his sudden death. Bob was diagnosed with aggressive lung cancer in February and passed away peacefully, April 23, 2018 at age 78. Bob was born December 20, 1939 and raised in the South Shore neighborhood. He attended St. Philip Neri grammar school and Mt. Carmel High School. Bob then headed West to the University of Colorado where he was a member of Chi Psi fraternity and graduated in 1961. After college, Bob's first work experience was at the front of the classroom teaching history at Chicago's Bowen High School. From there he followed a "calling" to the Chicago Police Department, Star #1171, working in various patrol districts including South Chicago and Near North. Bob was awarded numerous merit citations for bravery and going "above and beyond" the call of duty. At age 50, Sergeant Walsh took early retirement to enjoy all that life had to offer. Bob was a man with a wide range of interests: railroads, travel, music, and reading. In his youth, Bob's model train in the Walsh family home on Merrill Avenue was a sight to behold. During his bi-annual trips driving throughout the United States, he caught up with old friends and photographed railroad engineering feats such as the Tehachapi Loop in California. He also found enjoyment being "out and about" on his bicycle, pedaling from South Shore to Hyde Park to downtown. A lover of music, Bob's tastes ran the gamut from Richard Rogers' "Victory at Sea" to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, from composers Leroy Anderson to Burt Bacharach. He was an avid reader. Daily PRINT newspapers were a MUST and his bookshelves brimmed with works on military history, foreign policy, current events, railroads, and biographies. Bob made a point of "keeping in touch" with friends from all aspects of his life. He never missed a Mt. Carmel Annual Alumni banquet, a Green Tree Christmas Ball, a University of Colorado homecoming, or reunions with pals from Bowen High School or the Chicago Police Department. He loved to celebrate birthdays and ALL holidays with his family. He was the first to arrive; Coca-Cola and vanilla ice cream with hot fudge sauce put a smile on his face. Bob Walsh was a man of his word. He was caring and loyal with a capital "L." His passing has brought deep sorrow to his family and friends. He was devoted to and is survived by: his sisters, Karen Stevens and Kate Leatham (Jerry) (Chicago, IL); his brother, Jay (Susanna) (Norfolk, VA); and many cousins from the Walsh, Gallagher, Duffy and Graham families. He was preceded in death by his loving parents, Robert E. Walsh and Catherine Walsh (Palandech). Due to his sudden death, a Memorial Service will be held at a later date. Details will be updated on www.donnellanfuneral.com when they are finalized. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mt. Carmel High School, 6410 S. Dante Avenue, Chicago, Illinois 60637 in memory of Robert E. Walsh, Jr., Class of 1957. Service Information: Donnellan Family Funeral Services 847 675-1990.

Bob was an amazing guy. He had an incredible loyalty to people he met or valued. He liked to teach and inform others, especially friends, and I don't know what he would be thinking if still here with the present news climate. He is protected from this, thank God.
The news articles with comments Bob sent over the years are still valuable today and are kept. He was a brave, talented, sharp policeman who is greatly needed now. We lost a hero who never took a step back. We greatly miss him. We miss you, Bob!! Thank you for your service! Big time.

I thought of Bob Walsh today, sort of a shot from the blue. REWJR. Thats sort of what came up.
.
Bob and my Mother, Brenda Elliott were romantically involved when I was young, somewhere around 1978.

I really loved Bob back then. He was huge (as in size) from a young boys perspective, and smart and funny and nice.

He was really good to me and my sister. We loved him.

I never did reconnect with him as an adult which is my loss.

I thought of him today and that I would love to talk to him again. I am sad for his passing.

Here it is, an entire year has passed. When heading to Chicago on Indianapolis Blvd., the assortment of railroad
locomotives, cars, etc., are a constant reminder of Robert. The late night phone calls are also missed.

You have my deepest sympathies. Bob was a kind man, concerned about his neighbors. I know this personally, because he lived in the apartment next to me. I would collect his Wall Street Journal issues when he went on his trips . Upon his return he would take me out to lunch - cheeseburger and a diet Pepsi. I think of him warmly each time I pass his empty apartment or his car in the garage. He loved this city deeply, and served its person well. We will miss him.

Bob was a great friend to my Dad, Jim Mahoney, going back to their fraternity days together at Colorado. When I was going to school in Hyde Park he'd call me up and take me to lunch, sharing tales from his time in Chi Psi and as a police officer. He was always so kind, and made a point of checking on me after my parents passed. I didn't know him as well as I would have liked, but it was clear that he had a huge heart and was a true and loyal friend. My deepest sympathies to your family.

Bob was a great and loyal friend to so many people. I feel privileged to have known him. He was an outstanding cop, dedicated, aware, and good to his men. He was fun and loved his family. His keen interest in history and daily politics challenged everyone he got to know. God bless Bob for all his brave years of service and my sincere condolences and sympathy to his dear family.

To the Walsh family you have my condolences for his loss. When you look at all the entries in "The Guest Book" you'll notice they all mention the same things, good wit, smart, good sense of humor, fun. He had/was all those neat things we enjoy about a person. And when you look into the sky tonight, you'll notice it a little brighter, as a new star has been added to the heavens above.

Bob and I worked together and I worked for him at different times on the CPD.
Bob was always an up person and fun to be around.
He questioned authority often and loved writing 4 pages of questions to the higher ups.
I"ll never forget the day I turned on the TV and there was Bob climbing up the side
of a building of a guy who killed two Chicago Police officers and Bob showing no fear
just did his job.

Few people in life had his flare he lit up a room and we are better off to have met him.
He was a cops Cop.

I initially met Robert at the Purple Steer restaurant, late evening at the coffee counter, reading a book. Timeframe approximately
2005. We shared a common interest in railroad related things, He
would mention items from train periodicals, Trains Magazine in particular. I helped take apart his Lionel "O" gauge train set and
table. He wanted a new TV, and we selected one at WalMart, a 20- inch flat screen. Periodically, he would bring his car to Whiting for service, and I'd receive a phone call to pick him up, and off to lunch.
There were times when Robert was train watching near the Amtrak station at Hammond, I'd get a phone call to come jump-start the car.
He would forget the headlights were on, down went the battery.
I would be the recipient of late night phone calls when Robert would
relate some current event or story from radio or newspaper.
I'll miss those calls, and summons to go eat somewhere. As with
others, his friendship will be missed by this writer.

My condolences to Bob's family. I knew Bob for many years while both of us served in the CPD.
I will always cherish his quick wit and dry sense of humor. He will be missed by the many men and women with whom he served with in the CPD.

God's speed to heaven and "until we meet again may God hold you in the hollow of his hand."

Mr. Walsh was my history teacher in summer school at Bowen in the summer of 1965. His spirit and passion brought the subject alive in a way that made it an experience that I'm remembering to this day nearly 53 years later. May his memory always be for a blessing.

Patty and I send our thoughts and prayers to Katie, Jay and Karen. Bob was an imposing figure to our generation growing up in South Shore, playing center on the Mt. Carmel High School basketball team, growing up with a love of law enforcement which led to his calling. Several years ago we had lunch with Bob in Laguna Beach on one of his "country car jaunts." He showed us his portable bike on which he would take "sub-trips" wherever. An admitted "train nut" he was on his way to cover several antiquated railroad routes throughout California. The Walsh house on Merrill Avenue was always open. We last heard from him in a congratulatory phone message when he saw the video of my true crime book, "Final Affair," on Forensic Files. He will be one of those talked about at reunions. And talked about again.

Robert was a true giant of a man, very tall and imposing, but with an even bigger heart. So great to spend eighteen years of my life living next door to Bobby and his most wonderful parents, sisters and brother. And to enjoy his friendship all these years since. My deepest and dearest sympathies to Karen, Jay, and Katie. He is in heaven; we shall be there too
for the grand Merrill Avenue Reunion. Rest in well deserved peace, Robert. XOXOXO

It was wonderful to live next door to the Walsh family, Bobby was always our protector and we cherished the "Cokes to go" from Rosenbloom's drug store that Bobby treated us to. He had a great laugh and a love of railroads, he shared his knowledge and love of life with the whole family.... we miss him and know he is in God's hands..... So many Merrill Avenue neighbors greeting him at the Gates of Heaven along with his wonderful parents..
