Rick Soll Obituary

Soll, Rick Of Chicago, died April 22, after a long battle with lung cancer. He was 69. Rick was a reporter for the Chicago Tribune and Sun-Times, revealing with depth and sensitivity the human interest side of major stories. He covered wars, trials, local and world conflicts, and the critical events in the lives of celebrities, politicians, and everyday people struggling to survive. Rick was also a co-editor and writer for Chicagoland Monthly and the Chicago Times and wrote articles for Chicago magazine. He received numerous journalism awards for his newspaper and magazine writing. Rick was born in Chicago in 1946, the son of Jules and Marjorie Soll. After graduating from New Trier High School, he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1968 from Colgate University, and a Master's Degree at Northwestern's Medill School of Journalism in 1970. Rick was a voracious reader, passionate golfer, gifted drummer, and a devoted pet dad to Sophie and Oliver. He will be forever missed by his loving wife and best friend, Pamela Zekman Soll, and devoted brother, Michael Soll. His friends and family will always remember his warmth and sense of humor, and his deep concern for the well-being of others. Funeral services are private. A memorial gathering for family and friends will be held on Saturday, April 30, 2:00 p.m. at his family home.

Pam, I am so sorry for your loss. Rick was a great guy to have living down the street. I will always remember him, not as a reporter, but simply as the nicest guy who enjoyed the simple pleasure of walking his dogs down Hutchinson along with the rest of us. I wish you and your family peace at this difficult time.

Dear Pam,

So glad we could share thoughts at the Memorial last Saturday - the room was filled with love - a little piece in all of us felt chipped away.

My heart goes out to you, I know you lost your best friend.

We will be thinking of you both often. xoxo

Dearest Pam,

Suspect few knew Rick better than I did. He was my roommate at Colgate and we shared an apartment on Sedgwick after graduation. He was best man at my 1st wedding, then stayed with us on our honeymoon!
A controversial guy? Perhaps. But doubt Rick would want it any other way. Simply put - he was one of the funniest, most talented, and self-effacing guys I was ever lucky enough to know. Besides all that, brother-Rick got the best looking women on the planet to fall at his feet.

So sorry to hear of Rick's passing. He and I knew each other well during our high school days at New Trier. We worked together in many different ensembles, bands and orchestras. A wonderful guy and an extremely talented drummer, who went on to a quite illustrious career as a journalist! My deepest condolences to the family.

Although it has been said that each person is unique and irreplaceable, Rick Soll truly personified this statement. Not only was he sharp witted and vastly talented but his deep thirst to understand everything, left no detail omitted nor unexamined. His love for knowing life; for demanding its' examination has left each and everyone of us a better person. Rick, an honor to have known you; to have been your friend. You will be missed as deeply as you are loved-always.
