Peter Giannopoulos Obituary

Your jersey is hung up at the Glenview ice arena. My son plays for an opposing team and we had a game at the rink today. As we walked down the hallway we came across your jersey and Photo. I told my son about what it was and the sacrifice you made. I myself am a combat veteran and have lost some friends. We take things very seriously and honor the fallen in our house. Just know that you have touched many lives and will continue forever. You will always be in my families prayers.

Thought about you a lot yesterday, Pete. Not sure how half of my life has passed since we lost you. You will never be forgotten.

Another Christmas.You are loved and missed.

On this Veterans Day I don't want to talk about my service. I want to talk about my friend Pete. Pete was one of the many young people that have come into our lives almost as surrogate children. Pete was awkward, shy, friendly and incredibly bright. He was on a full scholarship to Purdue University and seemed to have his life and future mapped out.
But that wasn't really what Pete wanted; Pete wanted to accomplish something that no one really thought he could, something that was his and his alone. Pete joined the Marine Corp at 17 years old. Anyone talking to Pete could obviously see that being a Marine was the thing he was most proud of.
In the early days of the Iraq war Pete's unit was called to serve. We were very worried, you see, Pete isn't the prototypical tip of the spear guy by appearances, he looked more like a computer programmer. But he was excited to serve. I remember saying to him just before he left Keep your head down and come home safe.
Pete was killed in Iraq. He was so young and innocent. His life ended before it had really begun. His death hit our family hard and we still think of him often. While I know we all still weep for him, I also know he was doing exactly what made him proudest.
So today, on Veterans Day. I salute my friend Pete. You are missed.
