Miriam Hoover Obituary

Hoover, Miriam U. After a life well lived for 104 years, Miriam U. Hoover passed away at her home in Palm Springs on March 6, 2018. Miriam was born in Humboldt, MI on November 1, 1913, the daughter of Justina and Tuomas Ulvinen. She grew up with eight sisters and three brothers on the family farm. She worked as a governess and then married H. Earl Hoover (1890-1985) who was her best friend and the love of her life. They traveled the world together and enjoyed every moment of their life together. Miriam always led an active life. She loved opera, symphony, ballet, and theatre. She was an active member and supporter of various churches, charities and social service and educational programs. She was a trustee for Seabury Western Theological Seminary, Episcopal Charities, The Living Desert, Palm Springs Art Museum, and Bishop Anderson House. As a philanthropist she supported many agencies not only in the Chicago area, but throughout the country and world. She had a devout faith and was supportive and loving of her family and their extended families. She loved getting together with family and reliving memories of her life with her sisters and brothers. She always enjoyed the family reunion in Michigan with four generations of the family getting together with her. Family was always important to Miriam. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Earl; her parents; her brothers and sisters and their spouses; stepsons, Gordon, Jack and Bob and daughters-in-law, Carol, Nancy and Bea. Miriam is survived by Michael A Leppen, her nephew, companion and best friend; her stepson and friend, H. Earl Hoover II (Barbara); her step-grandchildren, Gordon Hoover II, Wendy Chandler, Diana Filkins (Rick), Michael Hoover (Janis), Tim Hoover (Debra), Elizabeth Tapia (Richard), Courtney Cummings (John), John Hoover and Robert Hoover II (Candace); also by great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews. Miriam will be buried at Oakwood Cemetery, Chicago next to her husband Earl. A memorial will be held at St. Paul's in the Desert, Palm Springs on March 17th at 11:00 a.m. After the service, there will be a luncheon reception at Le Vallauris. There will also be a Memorial Service in Chicago at the Cathedral of St. James on April 28th at 11:00 a.m. A luncheon reception will be served at the Drake Hotel, Gold Coast Room following the service.

Again and again, year after year, we recall with great joy being with Miriam both on Bois Blanc, her summer home for many years, and on nearby Mackinac Island where we lived year-round for many years. She loved coming to Mackinac for long lunches, coming in her "launch," with her crew. Her Christian values and support within the Episcopal Church in Michigan and Illinois were manifest. Offering exemplary discipleship, with much love and caring for others.

Year after year we recall Miriam's Christ-like gentle but strong example of caring for others, both on and near Bois Blanc Island and Mackinac Island, and beyond. We will recall and celebrate our annual visits with Miriam on both islands forever. Her impish vit was off the charts.

Over a period of years, we in Trinity Episcopal on nearby Mackinac Island were blessed to spend time with Miriam, Father Philip Chester (from London, UK) and Miriam's friends on Miriam's Michigan island, Bois Blanc. Miriam loved Bois Blanc and her church there, and she loved coming via her "launch" to Mackinac,to lunch, to have horse & carriage tours, and to just talk with us hour after hour. She was an extraordinary & exemplary gracious disciple of Christ, and such a supportive Episcopalian. We will always miss our annual visits on one island or the other.

Michael, Bud and Barbara,
All of us travel through life leaving earth a bit better for being here...but Miriam and Earl left behind gigantic footsteps. Without their help from the very beginning, The Living Desert would not be the beloved institution it is today. Their support for educating the next generation and building this desert zoo and gardens into a world-class facility is immeasurable and all The Living Desert's family and friends are deeply indebted to the entire Hoover family. Rest in peace, dear Miriam.

Our sincere sympathies to Miriam Ulvinen Hoover's family. My Father Bernhardt Rosten from Humboldt, was Miriam's cousin and had ten children. I still have the high school graduation card she sent me with her best wishes. I didn't get to know her as that is how it goes in life sometimes, but I appreciated the kind words she expressed to me in the graduation card she sent me back in 1978, and our brief meetings during family reunions. Affectionately, (Miriam used this word as well, when signing my graduation card) Regina (Rosten) Kyllonen & husband Jeff

Miriam will be so missed on Bois Blanc Island every summer season she such awareness of sharing and caring for everyone. It is a chapter now closed for all in the Pines. She and Earl were so kind to all all us and anyone knowing them will agree. Dick used to be in and out of her home many years ago when he and Earl's son, Bud, were buddies. Miriam's attention to details around the Church and Community Building were uppermost in her life as the Hoover's were dedicated to community their entire life in Chicago, Palm Springs, and on the Island. It was delightful seeing her step down her ladder at her dock to take her morning swim. So often she could be seen pushing Earl out onto the porch to enjoy the sun. When they opened their Island cottage to cocktail parties, you knew it was going to be a lovely experience. Miriam's attention to what was necessary at some event in the Community Building always impressed me. Michael was her caring and sharing friend and he always saw to her every need. Miriam was so generous taking a few of us gals to Mackinaw Island with her in the "General" for the afternoon. Her devotion to the Church will leave a huge void for all who knew her on BBI, Chicago, and Palm Springs. One cannot imagine the loss Michael will have to endure.
