Malachy Flisk Obituary

Flisk C.F.D., Malachy R. "Sonny" Age 84, Ret. Capt. C.F.D., U.S. Air Force Veteran of Korean War. Beloved husband of the late Muriel V. (nee Cohen); loving father of Marie (David) Mindeman, Malachy Flisk (Jenelyn Villanueva) of Anchorage, AK, and Michael Flisk (Lisa O' Brien); dear grandpa of Kerry (Ben Frey), Katy (Adam Kohr), Michael, John, and Matthew Flisk; proud great-grandpa of Sylvia and Louise; devoted brother of John T., Brian, and Rev. Louden Flisk. He was preceded in death by his parents, Malachy M. and Marie (nee Hackett); his sister, Mary; and brothers, Thomas "Bud" (the late Marion) and Michael "Mick" Flisk, C.F.D. (Kathryn); also loved by many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Born and raised in St. Leo parish, Mal attended De La Salle Institute and DePaul University. He then served in the USAF, stationed in the U.K. during the Korean War. Upon his return to the U.S., he worked for the City of Chicago Dept. of Forestry. In 1963, he became a Chicago fireman, serving as engineer, lieutenant, and retiring as a captain from Engine 54 in 1997. During his 35 year career, Mal was an avid union member, participating in the strike of 1980 as a proud member of the Brotherhood of the Barrel (Moon's Goons). Malachy was loyal, and maintained many friendships from his childhood. He loved to throw a good party, and never met a stranger. He read voraciously, possessed a sharp wit, and loved Irish culture. Mal will be missed by family, friends, and comrades of Harte's Tavern. May the roof above us never fall in. And may the friends gathered below it never fall out. Visitation Monday 3:00 - 9:00 p.m. at Curley Funeral Home (Heeney-Laughlin Directors), 6116 W. 111th St., Chicago Ridge, IL 60415. Family and friends will meet at St. Bernadette Church, 9343 S. Francisco Ave., Evergreen Park, IL 60805 on Tuesday morning for visitation 10:00 a.m. prior to Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. Interment Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
