Kathleen Sweeney Obituary

Sweeney, Kathleen Patricia (nee Power) Age 91, was born on June 20, 1923 in Nenagh, County Tipperary, Ireland. She left Ireland at age 16 on one of the last passenger liners out of Ireland before World War II. She married Howard J. Sweeney, MD, the love of her life, with whom she spent 65 wonderful years. Together they created a beautiful and loving family, raised their seven children and three nieces who they loved as their own: the late Eileen (Larry Johnston) Sweeney of Washington, D.C., Gail (the late David Ghere) Ghere of Stillwater, MN, Patrick (Shari Brown-Sweeney) Sweeney of Flossmoor, Maureen (Corinne Kawecki) Sweeney of Evanston, Laura (John) Kelly of Northbrook, Carolyn (Steve) Luczak of Rockford, Timothy Sweeney of Northbrook, Kathy Greene of River Grove, Sandra (Timothy) Whaley of Yorkville, Michael Sweeney of Glenview; and daughter-in-law, Margy Sweeney of Evanston. Kathleen was proud to become an American citizen in 1996 and reminded her children that one of their greatest blessings was being born an American. Kathleen adored children and dedicated her life to loving and providing for others. She was a source of encouragement, happiness, and love for her 21 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. She was a formidable Scrabble opponent, an avid Northwestern fan, and a constant source of joy for those who knew her. Her beautiful legacy lives on and will continue to inspire each person she touched throughout her exceptional life. Visitation Wednesday 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Donnellan Family Funeral Home, 10045 Skokie Blvd. at Old Orchard Rd., Skokie, IL 60077. Funeral Mass Thursday 10:00 a.m. at Saint Norbert Church, 1801 Walters Ave., Northbrook, IL 60062. Interment All Saints Cemetery. Dr. Sweeney and Family,

Barbara and I want to express our deepest sympathies to you and all of the Sweeney Family. I knew Kathy due to the friendship she shared with my late mother Gene Keilman. I had the good fortune to meet Kathy and many of her family over the years when visiting along with my mother. She always made me feel welcome and conveyed a warmth that quickly puts one at ease. I am grateful to have met her and deeply appreciate the friendship she shared over the years with my mother.

Today is the day of my Mom's wake. How we miss her. I was just reading the guest book and smiled when I read the entry written by my friend, Karen. I can picture my Mom saying that about each one of her children and grandchildren. We were her life's work and she was so proud of each of us. Now we will go forward always holding her love close to us and remembering all the lessons she taught us.

What a blessing to have known Kathleen Sweeney. Few will recall Kathleen's contribution to arthroscopic surgery with the introduction of the Fuji mum; used for resection in the SweeKnee simulator.

My condolences to the whole family. For a truly wonderful woman has left us and will be missed.

To my 2nd Mom, You are the love of my life, my inspiration for what I am doing now-which is returning to school. We had many happy times together, the last one was when we finished a jigsaw puzzle together-how happy we both were! I saved the recording on my answering machine on my B-Day that my 2nd Mom left me on Oct 1st-I have premonations a lot of the times and I'm glad that I saved that recording because now I will always hear her wish me a Happy Birthday for the rest of my life and that means lot to me. Kathleen Sweeney is a wonderful woman she was kind yet firm. I think one of her happiest moments was when Kathleen became a citizen of U.S.A. After that was the the joyous occasion of a grandchild beig born esp. when it turned into greatgrandchildren!! My 2nd Mom & Dad were very happy to get away from it all and go to their house in Galena where I imagine they would just take it easy and maybe go to quaint boutiques. My 2nd mom lived a good life filled with kids, which were her life until Dad got home from the Hospital then her focus was on him, making sure he had eaten, was he comfortable, what show did he want to watch and it was always one of two shows 1) MASH 2) Benny Hill. It was a good life!!
I will miss my 2nd mom greatly it will hurt all the time now, but as time meanders as it's prone to do, out of the blue some scent, a glimpse of something will strike a chord and a mass of memories will become my 2nd mom all over again-which is sometimes what we live for "Memories". This was Kathleen's favorite Irish Poems it's called The Irish Blessing: May the road rise up to meet you. May the wind always be at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face, and rains fall soft upon your fields, and until we meet again, May God hold you in the palm of His Hand. Kathleen until we meet again know that I love you, miss you, will think of you often,& say hi to everyone I know up there, including my pets. XXXOOO Lots of Love, Kathy
