James Furner Obituary

Furner, James Michael 64, of Chicago and formerly of Palatine, beloved husband of Sylvia (Eisenstein) for 43 years, committed father of Christine, Tracy (Simon) Stein and Brian (Bethany Elkington) and most cherished "Papa" of Evan and Audrey Stein. Brother of Richard (Renate) Furner and Robert (Bonnie) Furner. He was preceded in death by his parents, Geraldine (Ryan) and Harry James Furner. Fond uncle and cousin to many and friend to everyone he met. Jim spent his career in advertising, working for over 10 years at Allstate Insurance followed by over 20 years with Wickes Furniture. He found his greatest joys in retirement as a grandfather and in travels to Tanzania where he fell in love with the country and the people of the Kibaoni Primary School. Box 13046, Chicago, IL 60613or to Marklund Home (http://www.marklund.org). Visitation will be held at the Lakeview Funeral Home at 1458 West Belmont on Monday from 3:00 pm until 8:00 pm. Funeral mass will be said at St. Benedict Church at 2215 West Irving Park Road at 10:30 am on Tuesday, followed by burial at Graceland Cemetery at 4001 N. Clark Street. Those of us who worked with Jim at Allstate knew how clever and talented he was. I was fortunate to have been able to have reconnected with Jim recently. This is a real tragedy for Jim's family and for his "family" in Africa. He will be sorely missed. -Bill Jacobson

Sylvia and Family, I was stunned to learn of Jim's passing today through Heath McFaul. I have the fondest memories of him as a supporter of the Cultural Awareness Program so many years ago and then, for his newer found love, the Kiboani School in Tanzania. I'm so glad and blessed that he came back into my life at the end of my professional career to inspire me with his ability to make such a difference through volunteerism. I'm certain his life was well celebrated and that his memory will live long and strong in all of our hearts...I know he will in mine.

Dear Furner Family, I am deeply saddened as are my team members with Operation Africa Relief. Jim and Sylvie provided us with guidance and inspiration. Having just returned from Zimbabwe, I felt the joy of making a difference. I have used the Furner's efforts as a benchmark and thus Jim's legacy will continue to grow in the small village we support..I am sure Jim will look over our kids and provide us with eternal guidance from above.. Much Love, David Koehler and OAR

Dear Furner family; I have been following the Caring Bridge journal, just unable to express my feelings through his last weeks. He is at peace now, we send you all our sympathies. We worked with Jim for 12+ years at Wickes and loved his humor, (we actually got his humor).. He did great things with his life, which includes all of YOU. Stay strong for each other. Love, Jack and Sharon Hyde
