Brigitte Peterhans Obituary

Peterhans, Brigitte

Brigitte Peterhans has passed away near her home in Stuttgart, Germany. She was a graduate of the School of Architecture at the Illinois Institute of Technology and was an architect with Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill in Chicago. She was preceded in death by her husband Walter Peterhans, noted photographer and professor at the Bauhaus and at IIT. She is survived by two brothers, Joerg Schlaich and Peter Schlaich, both in Germany, and by many nieces and nephews.

I am so sad to hear about Brigitte passing away. She was a great friend from the time I worked for SOM in Chicago. She visited me and my husband Dennis in Iceland in 2017 and 2019 on her way to Germany. We had a wonderful time together touring Iceland. She was such a wonderful human being in so many ways, independent, generous, intelligent with a great sense of humour. I will miss her greatly.

Condolences to Briggitte's family. She was a wonderful friend who helped my mother raise me and my brothers. It was also my great fortune to see her several times recently and be a guest , with my wife,, in her home. Her kindness, generosity, intelligence and humor will be with us forever.

Brigitte influenced my architectural career more than she would want to admit. From HWP in Stuttgart, to Chicago and then London our paths crossed. She had a desire and a passion to create the best architecture and demanded the same from everyone who worked for her. Whilst we fought in the office she would drop presents off to my family. Her memory will live on.

Brigitte ! I hope you’ll always ride your bike and keep all your spry spirit alive. Keep making gingerbread houses and the little ones excited. My brother and I were beyond fortunate to have you as an adult to look up to and to have you look after as children through adulthood. Thank you for your laughter and light. We love you.

My heartfelt condolences to Brigitte’s family, friends, and colleagues.... I am very sad to hear that the world lost an exceedingly talented and highly respected Architect, as well as a kind and compassionate human being. Brigitte leaves indelible footprints in the field of architecture and warm memories in the hearts of those whose lives she touched....

(Brigitte and my late husband, John, were colleagues at SOM. Our paths continued to cross throughout the years, long after their tenure at SOM, as well as after John’s death.)
