Josephs, Daniel Edward
Daniel "Dan" Edward Josephs passed away on Friday, April 17, 2026. Dan was born on August 8, 1931, in Chicago to Leo and Mary Josephs (Szulcynski). He attended Foreman High School. He started his career at Jewel Food Stores working his way up from a stock clerk, through vice-president of area operations and then to a marketing executive. He received his bachelor's degree from Northwestern University and his master's in business administration from University of Chicago's Executive Program. He was a respected supermarket executive, advancing in his career as President of Kohl's Food Stores in Wisconsin and Pantry Pride in Florida, and eventually the President and Chief Operating Officer of Dominick's Finer Foods from 1985 to 1995. Under his tutelage, Dominick's changed from a family company to a dynamic organization which gained significant market share in the Chicagoland area. He was a mentor to many and a friend to all in the supermarket industry. His keen business sense and love of the industry were a guiding light to all. He met the love of his life Judith Josephs, while stocking groceries at a Jewel food store. They would marry five years later on October 9, 1954. They made their home in Chicago and enjoyed seventy amazing years together. After retirement, Dan and Judy traveled the world together, visiting Europe, the Caribbean, South America, New Zealand, but their favorite destination was Capri, Italy. Closer to home, they enjoyed the Chicago Symphony and summer concerts at Millennium Park.He loved being with his family and was a wonderful grandfather to his nine grandchildren, and most recently four great-grandsons. He was a dedicated Cubs fan for 91 years. For Dan, there was never a bad day at Wrigley Field. Every year, he looked forward to the Cubs Convention and spring training games in Mesa, never giving up hope that this could be the year. The year finally came in 2016 when the Cubs won the World Series, and he celebrated the momentous event with his beloved family. He always made time for his many friends, enjoying a game of golf, his Tuesday morning breakfasts, and his monthly breakfasts with former Dominick's employees. He was an avid reader and was well-versed in military history, often citing his knowledge about World War II and the Civil War. He will be missed dearly by his family, friends, and all those whom he came in contact with him throughout his life. Daniel Josephs of Westchester, age 94.
