Bradley Schaeffer Obituary

Schaeffer, S.J., Fr. Bradley Martin

Let us pray in thanksgiving for the life of our brother, Fr. Bradley Martin Schaeffer, S.J. who died on March 28, 2024, at Trinity Genesis Hospital in Holly, MI. He was 74 years old. Brad is survived by his siblings, Joanne Sefcik (Michael), Karen Gilliat (Ron), Lizbeth Willert (Peter) and Scott Schaeffer. He is preceded in death by his parents Florence Josephine Schaeffer and Joseph Peter Schaeffer. Brad was born on July 21, 1949, in Chicago, IL. He entered the Chicago Province of the Society of Jesus August 21, 1967, at Milford Novitiate, Milford, OH. He was ordained a priest on June 11, 1977, at St. Ignatius Church, Chicago, IL, and pronounced final vows at St. Xavier High School Cincinnati, OH. While in the Society, Brad earned a Master's of Counseling Degree from Boston College. He also earned a Master's Degree in Divinity from Jesuit School of Theology in Chicago, IL. Brad worked in secondary education for many years both at St. Xavier High School in Cincinnati and St. Ignatius College Prep in Chicago. He also spent much of his life working in internal administration positions in the province office and as a superior of Jesuit communities. Brad was very proud that, in 1996, he was able to help found Cristo Rey Jesuit High School in Chicago. Almost four dozen high schools in the USA now use the Cristo Rey educational model. Brad was a devoted priest and Jesuit. He had a great love of the Society of Jesus and the Eucharist. He was caring, thoughtful, and supportive of everyone he met - especially Jesuits in formation and elderly Jesuits. We knew Fr. Schaeffer for many decades. He was an energizing force in the multiple positions that he held, making countless friends along the way. He had an engaging smile that revealed his earnest interest and enthusiasm. He was most proud of his work on Cristo Rey, which reflected his deep commitment to education and Jesuit values. We will miss him very much. He was a true man of God. May he rest in eternal peace.
With deepest sympathy and condolences to his family,
