Amal Centers Obituary
Amal Centers, Sr., born in Chicago, Illinois, in 1957, passed away at the age of 67 after a courageous battle with Multiple Myeloma and Amyloidosis. Diagnosed only a few months ago, Amal faced his illness with the strength and grace that defined his life.
Amal is survived by his devoted wife of 47 years, Judy; his beloved son, Amal Jr. (Karin); his siblings, Ouida, Gladys, and Billy; and countless friends and mentees whose lives he touched deeply. He was preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Frankie Mae Centers, who resided in Hazard, Kentucky.
Amal's legacy is one of unwavering dedication to family, community, and service. For over 40 years, he was a cornerstone of the Scouting program in the Chicago area, serving as a Troop Scoutmaster, Assistant District Commissioner, and mentor to more than 75 Eagle Scouts. His guidance extended beyond Scouting, as he became a father figure to many young people throughout his life.
A devoted member of his local Catholic Church. Amal was an active participant in the churches Men's Club, having served multiple terms as one of the club's Presidents, and he was proud to be a member of the Knights of Columbus. Professionally, he spent over 38 years as a truck driver, earning the respect of his peers as a Union Steward and longtime member of Teamsters Local 710. Before his civilian career, Amal served his country honorably as a Combat Engineer in the U.S. Army and was a proud member of the American Legion Post #735 in Chicago.
Amal's life was a testament to service, love, and leadership. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Visitation is Saturday from 2 PM to 8 PM at Foran Funeral Home, 7300 W. Archer Ave. (55 th street just west of Harlem). A Service in Celebration of Amal's life will begin at 6:30 PM with military honors, and a Broken Arrow Ceremony by the Boy's Scouts.
