Donald Mullner Obituary

Don was born April 23, 1947 in Chicago, IL to Michael J. Mullner and Florence Dupke Mullner. Don died March 18, 2009 suddenly at his home in Oswego, IL. He will be missed by everyone who knew and loved him.

He graduated from St. Viator High School in Arlington Heights, IL and received a Bachelor in Science in 1969 from Bradley University in Peoria. At Bradley, Don was a member of Phi Kappa Tau fraternity where he was the house manager. Don continued his education at Northern Illinois University where he received a Masters of Business Administration with an accounting major. At NIU, Don was inducted into Beta Gamma Sigma, a national accounting honorary.

Don worked as the facilities manager for the past three years at Neuqua Valley High School in Naperville, IL under Aramark Corporation. Prior to this he most recently worked at Siemens Corporation, formally Furnas in Batavia, IL for 15 years as their facility manager prior to the company closing the plant. Don enjoyed doing woodworking in his spare time and has left his family with many pieces of beautiful furniture to remember him. Don was a member of the Oswego Council Knights of Columbus 7247 where he was inducted into the organization's charter Grand Knight in 1979. He recently celebrated the Council's recent 30th anniversary with some of his brother knights and wives. He was also a 4th Degree Knight, the highest level of brotherhood recognition.

Surviving Don is his wife of 38 years, Darla Hopper Mullner. The Mullners met while students at Bradley University in a physics laboratory and sparks began to fly. They were married on August 15, 1970 in Pekin, IL. Also surviving Don are his two daughters, Amy (Stanley) Amelkovich of Glen Ellyn, and Erica (Russ) Lorenz of Montgomery. Don also had two grandchildren who he adored, four year old, Owen and one year old, Kylie Amelkovich.

Other family members surviving include his mother, Florence Mullner of Elk Grove Village; his sister, Marilyn Gols of Elk Grove Village; and a brother, David (Cindy) Mullner of Hanover Park. Also, a niece, Valerie (Robert) Barrett of Island Lake; a nephew, Matthew Mullner of Hanover Park.

Don was preceded in death by his father, Michael Mullner in 1998; his maternal grandparents, Mae and John Erdmann; and his paternal grandparents, Michael and Mary Mullner.

Family will be receiving guests on Sunday, March 22, 2009 from 2:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at Dieterle Memorial Home, 1120 S. Broadway Ave., Montgomery, IL 60538. Funeral Mass will be on Monday, March 23, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Anne's Catholic Church, 551 Boulder Hill Pass, Oswego, IL 60543. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Don's memory may be made to Rush Copley Healthcare Foundation in Aurora, IL.

Though I worked at furnas for 14 years 86 to 2000 and saw him many times at the Batavia facility, I never had the opportunity to speak to him. I am sorry to hear that he has left us to meet with our Lord. He is just one more friend we have there waiting for us. When I go, I'll make sure to speak to him there.

Dear Mullner Family,
I am saddened by your loss, and know the Neuqua Valley family will truly miss Don's presence. I had the honor of meeting Don while acting as the previous facility manager at NVHS. Don replaced me as my family and I were moving out of state. While I was supposed to "train" Don, I found he mentored me more than I him. I worked with him for a while as a maintenance tech prior to my move. He was easy going and a good manager. My family and I wish you and yours well in your time of grief.

Dear Darla,
I am also a member of the Oswego Knights of Columbus and a Past Grand Knight as was Don. He was always great to be around - whether joking, working together on any of the KC's many activities, or just talking. Pat & I enjoyed our fun Apple River weekends where we did all those touristy things, cheese tasting, wine tasting, going to any of the many craft fairs, eating out, and just plain enjoying ourselves. Don was a terrific person and a good example to follow. Our prayers and thoughts are with you.

Dear Mrs. Mullner & Family,

I am a member of The Oswego Council #7247 Knights of Columbus, and like Don, I am also a past Grand Knight. Don was one of the most decent, honorable and Christian men I have ever met. I have great memories of working alongside Don at Pancake breakfasts and Pork Chop dinners. But mostly I will always remember his deep faith in God and the way he loved his wife and children so dearly, and spoke of them constantly. Our loss is truly Heaven's gain.
