Mary Coble Obituary

Harlingen - Mary Eleanor Coble, 84, passed away peacefully on July 12, 2024 at home in San Benito, Texas.

Mary was an accomplished teacher, having earned her Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Pan American University. She taught at San Benito High School for many years.

When she wasn't teaching, Mary loved reading, birdwatching, knitting and quilting for her family, and spending time with family and friends. After her retirement in 2002, Mary enjoyed traveling and spending more time with her family.

She also volunteered at the literacy center teaching English and inspiring community members to accomplish their goals.

Mary is preceded in death by her father, Alfred Bradford and her mother, Lillian (Hoffman) Bradford; her first husband, Wallace Dale Means, and her second husband, Brown Coble. She is survived by her sons, Bradford (April) Means and David (Mary) Means, as well as her daughters, Lynn (Gary) Kier and Susan (Omar) Kier. She was the proud grandmother to two granddaughters, Alyssa and Rebekah . She is also survived by her brother, Steve (Pamela) and two nieces, Elizabeth and Alexandra.

It was Mary's desire to be buried in her hometown of Appleton, Wisconsin where she spent so many cherished days with her family near the north woods. A celebration of life will be held in her honor at a later date.

Known for her giving nature, she will be missed by all.

I recall her as Mrs. Means from San Benito High School. She was my summer school Algebra teacher back in 1990. I had to take the 1st semester over. And I ended up passing w a high grade .. in order to move to 12th grade!..
She was nice and patient.. I remember she would send us to the Blackboard to solve problems. ..lol.

Rest in peace and condolences to her family

It was my pleasure to know Mary; I was the Director of the Literacy Center of Harlingen for more than 30 years and I first met Mary when she became a volunteer teacher there. I thoroughly enjoyed conversations with Mary, learning about her life, and it was immediately apparent to me how much she loved teaching. She took a personal interest in each of her students and always gave her personal best in helping them to learn English. Mary and I became friends and kept in touch even after her volunteer stint ended. She was an amazing woman and I admired her strength and positive attitude through her health challenges. I will miss our friendship.
My condolences to the family; Mary always spoke with great pride about her granddaughters and how much she enjoyed spending time with them. I'm sure they will miss her greatly.
Rest in peace, Mary.
