Frederick Smith Obituary

Frederick William Smith

April 3, 1940 - May 20, 2025

Frederick William Smith was born in Casper, Wyo, on April 3, 1940, to William P. Smith and Nelle Cannady Smith and passed away on May 20, 2025. He grew up in Sinclair, Wyo, and graduated from Rawlins High School in 1958. Fred attended Scottsbluff Junior College in Scottsbluff, Neb, on a basketball scholarship and went on to attend the University of Texas at El Paso on an NCAA scholarship for basketball and he ultimately earned his bachelor's degree in English from the University of Wyoming. After college, Fred was a medic in the Wyoming Air National Guard where, among other assignments, he served in Vietnam. Fred went on to teach at Dean Morgan Junior High School and then Kelly Walsh High School in Casper where he taught English and coached football, basketball and track and field.

Fred married Lindy Musgrave on June 6, 1970, and they made their home in Casper. In 1973 they returned to Sinclair, Wyo, where they raised their three daughters, Stacey, Amy, and Shanna, and Fred taught at Rawlins High School. Additionally, he went on to teach at the Carbon County Higher Education Center and the Wyoming State Penitentiary. During his many years teaching at RHS he also served as the head of the English Department, the "bouncer" in the hallways before and after school, and the Detention Drill Sargent. In addition to this, he facilitated an after-school support group program for students struggling with different challenges and was a great advocate for so many students.

Fred and Lindy divorced in 1995, and he went on to meet Teresa (Terri) Jaramillo and they married in 1999 and would have celebrated their 26th anniversary this summer. Fred and Terri enjoyed their lives together spending time taking scenic drives, taking care of their pets, and relishing in the beauty of their yard that Fred meticulously cared for. Fred and Terri were wonderful companions and shared many happy years together.

Fred is preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Nelle Smith; his father-in law and mother-in-law, Arthur and Leonor Jaramillo; his sister and brother-in-law, Clancy and Milo Galovich; brothers-in-law, Arthur and Michael Jaramillo; nephews, Butch Galovich and Fred Crawford, and great granddaughter, Hope Deere.

He is survived by his wife, Teresa (Terri); his daughters, Stacey Stewart and her husband Scot; Amy Lund; Shanna Kmoch and her husband Jeff; stepson, Richard Deere and his wife, Heather, and stepson Sean Deere and his wife, Aimee; grandchildren, Brandon and Max Bybee; Taylor, Cameran, and Sydney Lund; Daniel, Jacob and Gray Kmoch; Alyssa and Krystal Deere; Brayden and Kai Deere, and great grandchildren, Kayden, Faith, and Zachery.

Fred is also survived by in-laws, Art and Missy Jaramillo and family; Bill and Caroline Jaramillo and family; Stan and Kathy White and family; Ernie Jaramillo and family; Rick and Jane Harden and family; Joe Jaramillo, and Martin and Ronnie Goicoechea and family.

In addition to his passion for teaching, Fred also had a great love for the outdoors. He particularly enjoyed fishing the North Platte River and spending time with his family at the cabin. He will be remembered for his sharp wit, dry sense of humor, and mostly the positive impact he had on countless students, both young and old, throughout his years as an educator.

As per Fred's wishes, cremation has taken place and there will not be any memorial services.

Rest in peace, Mr. Smith! I will not forget you; you never forgot me. Mr. Smith touched so many lives and was one of the neatest individuals I have ever had the pleasure to learn from. Much love and many prayers to his family.
