Linwood Davenport Obituary

DAVENPORT, Linwood Wayne "Butch", passed away May 17, 2024 surrounded by family. He was born June 7, 1938 in Richmond, VA to the late Linwood and Catherine Davenport. Butch was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Linda Lee Southward; and in-laws, Burton and Dorothy Atkinson. He is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, ValJean Davenport; son, Wayne Davenport, Jr. (Alice); daughter, Catherine Barlow (Keith); grandchildren, April Davenport Boykin (Jason), Morgan Rudd (Dillon), Devin Barlow (Abbie), Jonathan Barlow, and Claire Barlow; and great-grandchildren, Cash Castlebury, Caroline Boykin, and Colson Barlow.

Butch first worked at The Richmond News Leader, but left to farm and build houses with his father-in-law in King William, eventually turning to farming full time. He was an active member of the King William Ruritan Club for 41 years. He and six others founded the Spring Meadows Hunt Club in 1960, which is still going strong today with 33 members. His greatest happiness was farming and time spent at his river home on the Rappahannock with family and friends. If he wasn't on the farm, you would always find him near his cherished ValJean.

A funeral service will be held 4 p.m. Tuesday, May 28 at Corinth Christian Church, located at 9153 Dabneys Mill Rd., Manquin, VA 23106. The family will receive friends from 2:30 to 4 p.m. prior to the funeral service. Interment will be private.
