Barbara Terhorst Obituary

Barbara M. Terhorst

June 6, 1933 - July 26, 2024

Barbara M. Terhorst died peacefully in her sleep on July 26. She was 91 years old.

Born in NYC to William and Mary Manders, she was predeceased by her parents, her step- father, Frederick Finner, her brother, Bill Manders and his wife, Marlyn Terhorst, her hus- band Major Bernard R. Terhorst USMC, her daughter Tara (Sanders) and her son Tony.

She is survived by her children Peter (Valya), Brian, Jenny and Meaghan; grandchildren Diana Sampson (Matthew), Tony, Allegra, Gage, Olivia, Mason and Ju- lian and her beloved great grand- children, Kieran (the redhead) and Tara; her nephews and nieces Richard Manders (Korinne), Thomas Manders (Diane), Wayne Nuessle (Kim), and Melinda Cappelini (Jeff).

Barbara's childhood was spent in the Bronx where she graduated from Sacred Heart of Mary Academy.

While she was working for Chase Manhattan Bank, she met and married Bernie and happily became a Marine Corps wife. Married only 12 years and expecting her 6th child, Barbara was widowed when the helicop- ter Bernie was piloting was shot down in Vietnam.

The ensuing years as a single parent in Woodbridge, VA were uplifted by her lifetime love of singing and her belonging to "Sweet Adelines International" barbershop choruses. Most recently she was engaged in singing with a mixed chorus in Auburn, "The Soundbites."

Barbara was a long-time volunteer dating back to her days at the New York Foundling hospital; over 10 years delivering "Meals on Wheels" in Marin County, CA and most recently, a regular server at Hospitality House, "Utah's Place" in Grass Valley.

The love of her life was her children.

I was a flower girl at Barbara and Bernie´s wedding. I was 5. My family lived in an apartment above the Finners in The Bronx, NY. I remember her bubbly, infectious, kind personality and she was a great inspiration to me growing up.

Barbara gladly supported my 9 year old´s door to door Christmas wreath selling. We lived in the same neighborhood. She somehow found the strength to open her door and great us to receive the wreath, even though it was the day of her daughter´s passing. Such a strong, intelligent, loving, amazing person.

I met Barbara as a hospital employee/servant - visiting her when she was a patient to cater to her nutrition/meal needs. I was first stricken by her name "Barbara Mary" since my mother´s name was "Mary Barbara". Barbara and I INSTANTLY connected and resonated on many levels. When I told her my mother´s name, and that she only lived 30 years (died in an auto accident) the year before my 32-year-old law enforcement father died on-duty, she poured out her personal stories of losses unimaginable (especially her husband of 12 years who also died on-duty as a US Marine pilot when their 6th child was soon coming). We shared how immensely and intensely purposed our lives have been, pouring ourselves out to many in need so reflexively that it´s almost surreal. She told me "you´re one of Christ´s cross bearers just like I am!" We were instant soulmates with 30 years of age difference - she felt more like my spiritual mother than my own young mother did 50+ years ago (my mother was mentally ill most of my youth)! I´m grateful Barbara now soars in God´s glorious presence & space - will hopefully hug her in glory when my life callings are finished - I love you, Barbara Mary!

I first met Barbara at the most memorable of Halloween parties, held by her family.
Despite the tremendous losses she had experienced ~ or perhaps as a result of them ~ Barbara had a rare mix of intensity, irony, humor, and a deep appreciation of life.
Many blessings to you always beautiful soul.
