Dorothy "Dottie" Canady Watson went to walk the streets of gold on August 15th, 2024, at the age of 83.She lived in the loving home of her daughter, Valerie Grissom, alongside son-in-law, John "Tex" Grissom, and great-grandson, Dallas Grissom. Her grandson, Justin Grissom, preceded her in death. All of whom are of Hampstead NC. She further leaves behind daughter, Dee Sellars-Ivey and granddaughter, Kaylee Sellars of Wilmington NC. She was preceded in death by her parents, Norman and Edna Cain of Skowhegan, Maine.
Dottie was born in Skowhegan Maine on June 19th, 1941, and graduated at the top of her class in 1961 in Business Administration.
On a blind date she would come to meet James "Art" Canady, born in Castle Hayne, NC on August 6th, 1941 and passed December 10th, 2016, who happened to be stationed at Dow Air Force Base. They would marry and move to Art's hometown Castle Hayne in NC to start a family, where Valerie was born on August 16th, 1962 and was followed by Dee on April 23rd, 1965.
Dottie loved her girls very much, sewing clothes for them and their baby dolls. Rocking and singing 'Froggy went a courtin' and 'You are my Sunshine'. This continued on with her grandchildren and great-grandchild. She was always a huge part of their lives, from Girl Scouts to homework, ballet and horseback lessons, baseball and cheerleading. You could always look up and see mom smiling there for us like a warm ray of sunshine.
She loved the simple things in life. She enjoyed nature, her bluebirds, gardening, the box turtle living in the yard, a good hallmark movie and a dog sitting by her side.
She oh so loved fishing, and of course our whole family loved fishing together, but watching Mom reel in a fish was like watching Wicked Tuna! You didn't get in her way or try to help her, she had her own technique to it like Lucille Ball would have had! But by the grace of God would she land that fish!
On July 10th, 2004, Mom and Poppa James, (partner in crime) companion, James Guthrie, won the Got-Em-On King Mackerel tournament with a fish weighing in at 44.79lbs. We will never forget watching mom holding up that big King Mackerel at the weigh station.
There was never a dull moment being around her, we just laughed and laughed and laughed some more.
Thank you, for being you, for the wrinkles from laughing for so many years together. You were truly an amazing Mom. If only everyone could be blessed with a Mom like you.
Our mother Dottie will be forever missed. She was the most incredible friend and mother anyone could ever have. Ever patient, ever giving, ever kind and ever loving. We would always say there are no goodbyes, only "I love you" and "See you later!"
And yes, our sweet Mom, we love you and we will see you later.
A Memorial Service will be held at 3:00PM Thursday, August 29, 2024, at Andrews Market Street Chapel, with Rev. Skip Williams officiating.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Dottie’s memory may be made to the animal shelter of one’s choice.
Share online condolences with the family, here, in the guestbook.

Dottie’s smile was infectious! My heart hurts for your family to have such a wonderful family cornerstone lost but I can’t help but think several beautiful reunions began with her first breath in Heaven. May God’s strength and love be around you for many days to come

I did not know Dottie very well, but she raised an amazing daughter, Dee Ivey. I enjoyed reading the stories Dee wrote about her mother visualizing all the fun they had fishing. I’m genuinely sorry for Dottie’s passing, but I know she’s in a much better place now catching even bigger fish and in perfect health. Sending love to you and your family at this most difficult time. ❤

I knew Dottie’s through our working together at The Plant Place years ago. While there, I became good friends with her daughter Dee Ivey. Dottie was a lovely woman, very kind and gentle. She will be missed.
