Thomas McWHIRTER Obituary

McWHIRTER, Thomas W. 81, died in Port Richey, FL on July 27, 2024, after suffering with a chronic illness. He was born in Lubbock, TX in 1942, and moved to Clearwater in 1947. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Vickie Berges McWhirter; sons, Thomas (Susan) Floral City, FL, Todd (Dana) Crystal Beach, FL and Tim, Rockville, MD; daughters, Shae, Port Richey and Kristine Hamilton (Jeff) High Point, NC. Tom leaves behind four sisters, Sandra Kimble (Lyle) Brandon, FL, Gayle Steinmeier (Tim) Hawthorne, CA, Cathie Slicker (Mike) Gulfport, and Mary Overfelt (Michael), Luray, VA. He was a grandfather to Margo, Ellis, Natalie, Powell, William, Kiera and Leiah. Tom was preceded in death by his brother, Jim, of Land O'Lakes, FL. Tom was a 1960 graduate of Clearwater High School. He joined the U.S. Navy after graduation and was stationed in Quonset Point, RI. He married Lynda Repp; they had three sons. After his service, Tom worked for Honeywell, XEROX, and retired from Lucent Technologies. Tom was a humble, self-effacing, kind and thoughtful person. He was dearly loved by his family for whom he would do anything to protect. He was a huge Noles fan, and rarely missed a game. He was incredibly handy and could build anything. He built a computer in the late 70s before anyone knew about computers. He put additions on our home(s), added a fireplace, changed transmissions in our cars; you name it, he did it. Per his request, there will be no visitation or service. Please say a prayer for the repose of his soul. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Palm Harbor YMCA, where his grandkids grew up playing sports.
