Carol M. Baldwin Obituary

Carol M. Baldwin, 92, of Camillus, New York, passed away on Thursday, May 26th. Born Carol Newcomb Martineau in Syracuse on December 15, 1929, she was the child of Roy and Marion Martineau and had one brother and five sisters. She met her future husband, Alexander R. Baldwin, Jr., of Brooklyn, NY, while attending Syracuse University. In 1954, Alec (as he was also called), moved the family to Long Island where he taught at Massapequa High School until his death in 1983. Carol devoted herself to raising her children and when her last was a teenager, she went to work in marketing research for a firm called Quick Test. In 1990, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. After battling and surviving, she joined with a number of Long Island-wide breast cancer organizations. With the support of the university's then-president, Shirley Strum Kenny, The Carol M. Baldwin Breast Cancer Research Fund was opened on the campus of SUNY Stony Brook as well as The Carol M. Baldwin Breast Care Center. Some years later, Dr. Patricia Numann, in coordination with SUNY Upstate University, opened another chapter - The Carol M. Baldwin Fund of CNY - in Carol's hometown of Syracuse, NY. The combined efforts have raised millions of dollars for the cause. "She spent the last 32 years of her life as a fighter and a champion for the cause to which she devoted so much energy. We are all enormously proud of her accomplishments." Surviving are her six children, Elizabeth Baldwin, Alexander "Alec" Baldwin, Daniel Baldwin, William Baldwin, Jane Baldwin-Sasso and Stephen Baldwin; 25 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. The family will be hosting visitation on Friday, June 10, from 3PM to 6PM and 7PM to 9PM, at Abundant Life Christian Center, 7000 All Nations Blvd., East Syracuse, NY 13057. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Carol M. Baldwin Breast Cancer Research Fund of CNY, PO Box 187, Warners, NY 13164. I met Carol many years ago when she was attending Syracuse University through my sister -in-law, Joan. She was so bright and welcoming and showed a strong and sensible personality. I also felt fortunate to have known her delightful parents and most of her siblings. She was just the kind of person who made me feel comfortable with and enjoyed seeing her off and on through the years. Honest and down to earth come to mind when I think of Carol!
My deepest sympathies to her family through these difficult days.

My deepest sympathies to Beth, Jane, and all the guys. She was such a nice lady, so kind and welcoming. Her grandson John played lacrosse with my son at WG, and I used to see Beth at the fair and around Camillus. Carol will never be forgotten by so many and may she forever rest in peace at the right hand of the Lord........

I'm so sorry to hear of Carol's passing. She was a wonderful lady and such an inspiration. I remember when I rode with my brother on my deceased father's motorcycle in one of her rides. She walked around talking to everyone! She gave me a motorcycle pin with a pink ribbon, which I still treasure to this day. My prayers go out to the family.

Dear Beth and family,
While your dear mother was a true breast cancer crusader, it was you and your family who stood behind her every step of the way to make life a little better for those encountering this dreaded disease. Though dogged determination and hard work, you have provided research dollars, awareness, education, swaddling pink blankets, and best of all, hope to those who need it most. These are gifts to our community that provide a lasting legacy to the name Carol M. Baldwin. May the angels greet your mother with the same love and kindness that she has shown to countless others throughout her lifetime.

I was blessed to meet Mrs. Baldwin many years ago when she owned a Tea Room at SUN 7 in Camillus, NY.
I would stop in and have a tea while waiting for my appointment. She would always greet me with a kind word and a SMILE. She made it a point to say hello to everyone who came in.
I had no idea she was the mother of the famous BALDWIN sons for quite some time!! I just knew her as Carol, the sweet lady who owned the Tea Room at Sun 7.
Then one day while sitting sipping a cup of tea, I saw a large photo of her sons on the wall, and I asked her if she had a CRUSH on the Baldwin boys too? She laughed at me and said "A CRUSH on them?? " She said, " I guess you might say that, because I am their Mother! " With tea now coming out of my nostrils... we both were laughing!
Years later, a friend asked me to volunteer with her at a BREAST CANCER event in Syracuse ..but never mentioned any other details. That day I ran into Mrs. Baldwin again, and learned that is was HER BREAST CANCER FOUNDATION who was having the event. She was as kind as I remembered from years earlier, and she remembered me!
Mrs. Baldwin was beloved by so many people from Syracuse NY, not because of who her sons were but because of WHO SHE WAS!!! She did so much for women fighting breast cancer and her legacy is as beautiful as she was. She will no doubt be missed by many. Rest in Peace Mrs. Baldwin. Thank you for your kindness and everything you gave to our hometown. Godspeed. Prayers for all who love you.

I will never forget Carol. She reached out to me just after my diagnosis. Her daughter gave her my number, and Carol called and left me a message I will never forget. She said would help me,
and would be there with me if I needed her. She urged me to initiate treatment and emphasized that we are all warriors and we have the courage to do what needs to be done. Her words gave me the strength I needed to proceed, and I thought of her often during the process. God rest her soul and may her strength continue to inspire others to work for healing and for a cure. I love you, Carol. Rest in peace, warrior princess.

I had the privilege of working for her and Beth a few times at the NYS Fair. Whether it be at her beloved Wegmans, on an airplane or any other local spot, she always remembered me. For the many people that have crossed her path, it always surprised me. A reflection of her character. What a lovely and funny woman. My heart felt condolences to all.
