SOUTH BEND - Cheryl Frances Booze Alvarez, 69, of South Bend, passed away peacefully on October 24th, 2017, after a courageous six-year fight with breast cancer. She was born in Chicago to Fred and Girtlee (Ramey) Booze. She received her high school diploma from the University of Chicago Lab School, and two master's degrees from Roosevelt University.
She had a 35 year career as a Spanish teacher, as an adjunct college professor, and middle and high school teacher. After several years of teaching at LaSalle High School in South Bend, and upon its closing, she transferred to Washington High School, from which she retired in 2015.
Cheryl was an avid traveler, having explored Europe, Africa, Central and South America, and the Caribbean. She loved ice skating, swimming, gardening, and RV travel with her family. She also had a lifelong fondness for her pets. Her greatest joy was her role as a selfless and devoted mother.
Cheryl is survived by her beloved husband of 43 years, Jose Alvarez; two daughters, Karen Alvarez (Marc) and Kristen Alvarez (Laurent); nephew, Christopher Frizell (Carol); and many other cherished relatives. Cheryl was predeceased by her parents and sister, Carolyn Frizell.
Services will be private. In honor of Cheryl's legacy donation may be directed to the Humane Society of St. Joseph County, 2506 Grape Rd., Mishawaka, IN 46545, and the Center for Hospice Care, 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637.

I have a rather unusual story to share. A few weeks ago I took a short nap after work. Upon awakening, I told my husband and son about a very vivid dream I had just had. I was at some sort of gathering with many people. There was a large man in a suit who seemed to be a pastor or preacher. As I was leaving Cheryl popped into the room and thanked me for coming and said it had been good to see me. Cheryl was one of my Spanish teachers at IUSB circa 1990 or so. I hadn't run into her for over 10 years and yet there she was, prominent in my dream. I went out to our kitchen table and picked up the day's newspaper and opened it, as I do, to obituaries. I do this as I work for Center for Hospice and often we don't have the opportunity to know our patients lives as we wish we could. I immediately burst into tears when I saw Cheryl's obituary. It was good to see her one more time. I'm so happy she stopped by in my dream. She was a special lady, but you all know that. May good memories comfort you in your grief.

Thoughts and prayers for your family. Cheryl was a kind and wonderful Mother to her 2 beautiful daughters. Her love of animals was a blessing to me as I watched her love through her daughter Kristin's love of her horses.

I'm am very sorry to hear of Mrs. Alvarez's passing. She was an amazing teacher. I truly enjoyed my time in her Spanish class. I pray peace and comfort over the family.
