Ning Pan Obituary

In loving memory of Dr. Ning Pan - a brilliant scholar, a visionary innovator, and an effective educator whose legacy will inspire generations to come.

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Ning Pan on September 7, 2025. He was a Distinguished Professor Emeritus in Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering at University of California at Davis.

Dr. Ning Pan was born in the city of Xining in China on March 5, 1953. He was the first individual in China to earn a Doctoral Degree of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Textile Materials in 1985. He joined the faculty of University of California at Davis in 1990 and retired in 2021. He was internationally recognized. His research advanced the physics and engineering of fibrous materials, the biophysics of human–fabric interaction, and applications of nanotechnology in energy storage. Among his many achievements, he developed the PhabrOmeter®, now the U.S. standard for fabric hand evaluation.

Dr. Pan is survived by his wife, Hualin Huang, and his daughter, Katherine Pan.
