Don Taylor Obituary

Don E. Taylor CHESAPEAKE - Don E. Taylor, 70, lovingly known as "Pop Pop," departed this life Saturday, July 16, 2011, after a hard-fought battle with cancer in the arms of his loving wife and surrounded by his family. Don was born July 1, 1941 in Portsmouth, the third son to the late James and Helen K. Taylor. He grew up in Cradock and graduated from Cradock High School. As an adult, he received his associate's degree at Tidewater Community College. He was employed with the government as a telecommunications specialist. He also worked for Western Electric. He was an active member of the Ambassador Club of Portsmouth and Western Branch Athletic Club. He coached baseball, the boys and girls basketball, the girls softball in Western Branch, and the Western Branch Packers. He was involved with the PIT for many years as a coach then the head of the transportation committee and won the Harry "Hook" Hilman award. He loved beach music and "shag dancing" with his bride. He was married to and survived by his high school sweetheart and the love of his life, Dorothy R. "Mike" Taylor and they would have been married for 50 years in September. He is also survived by his only daughter, Michele T. Graupmann (Robert) of Chesapeake; three sons, Todd Taylor of Chesapeake, Sean Taylor (Cris) and Scott Taylor (Diana) of Portsmouth; his much-loved grandchildren, Mallory and Jay James, Lauren Gruapmann, Collin, Corbin and Abbey Taylor, Ryan Baggett, Kirsten and Patrick Worley, Shane Taylor and McKenzie and Ian Taylor; a special friend to the family, Jerry Freeman; his brothers, Jackie R. Taylor (Avenell) of Suffolk and Stephen T. Taylor (Lisa) of Portsmouth; a brother-in-law, William E. Riley Jr. "Pat" (Mary) of Ocean Sands, N.C. He was predeceased by his brothers, James and Aubrey Taylor, in-laws, Minnie L. and William E. Riley Sr.; and a brother-in-law, Gregory L. "Rusty" Riley. Don loved his family and all sports but he especially loved his N.Y. Yankees, Washington Redskins, ODU Football and ODU Men's and Women's Basketball. He followed Randolph-Macon's Women's Volleyball team for which his granddaughter Mallory is a member. He was the proud "Pop Pop" to all his grandchildren. Dad, "Did you ever know that you were our HERO" and mom will never dance again. To your grandchildren you were a great teacher and coach. You have no idea how much you will be missed but you fought the good fight. The family would like to thank the "angels" on 6RP at SNGH for their loving care and kindness during his three-week stay but especially Ann, Amy and Quita. Don continued to give even after he passed and thanks to his donation two people are now able to see. His "ashes to ashes" wish was to be cremated. A visitation will be held Tuesday, July 19, at Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, from 6 to 8 p.m. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at First Presbyterian Church, 515 Court St., Portsmouth, on Wednesday, July 20, at 2 p.m. followed by a reception in the social hall. A separate memorial service will be held at the Ambassador Club of Portsmouth on Peninsula Avenue and will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, July 21, followed by a reception. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the First Presbyterian Church or the Ambassador Club Scholarship Fund. www.SturtevantFuneralHome.com.

Mike,
This verse gave me comfort when I lost my dear Mother and best friend. She had a tough battle as did Don. God always takes care of those who have faith.

*God's Garden*
God looked around His garden and found an empty place.
He then looked down upon the earth and saw your tired face.
He put His arms around you and lifted you to rest.
God's garden must be beautiful as He always takes the best.
He knew that you were suffering and He knew you were in pain.
He knew that you would not get well upon this earth again.
He saw the road was getting rough and that the hills were hard to climb.
So He closed your weary eyelids and whispered "Peace Be Thine."
It broke our hearts to lose you, but you did not go alone.
For part of us went with you the day God called you home.

Mike,
Please know that you are in my heart. Only just today did I learn that Don is gone and I would have been at the service had I known!

All the good times at Portside and the Seawall are special memories to cherish - the music we all loved so much and being together! Don's smile and happy outlook made wherever he was brighter and fun. I can remember his time at TCC and how pleased he was to be there.

He will always be special to all who knew and loved him.

Dear Taylor Family. My heart is heavy with the news today of Don's passing. I worked with Don and met him just 3 years ago. We had great talks of our grandchildren and families. I recently lost my wife of 38 years yet still I have no message to comfort your loss. You need to stay strong, remember the man Don was and love one another. Your faith is your strength. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Sincerely, Johnny Phillips

Dear Mike and Family, Our hearts are heavy as we have learned of Don's passing. I can't think of a more perfect couple, ever! Wherever we happen to meet up, Don always put a smile of everyone's face. And if you two were something dancing. We will always have those memories. Doug remembers when Don, the new baby next door, came home. They were next door neighbors. He has always thought the world of Don. Your family was so blessed to have had him in your lives. He will continue to watch over you. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all at this most difficult time. Sincerely, Rosemary and Doug Phillips

Sometimes when I see an obituary, it is simply too hard to believe. I thought that Don was indestructible, that he would never end and certainly not before me. He was everything a good citizen and good family man could be. He earned respect from all who knew him. Mike and his children have my deepest personal sympathy. My thoughts are with you.

Mike and Family,
I know that the loss of Don has created a large void in your lives. Don put up a great fight against the illness that has taken him from you. To many he lost this fight however he really won. Don is now on his way home to be with our Father and there he waits for you. You will be with him again and he anxiously awaits for your arrival. Until then may God comfort you and watch over you.

Love,
Billy Taylor and family
