Alice Seaman Obituary

Alice Taylor Seaman lived a full life, unwavering in her love of family, friends, and faith. She was passionate about traveling and her commitment to educating young people, especially to improving their reading skills. She was the beloved wife of the late Marvin R. Seaman for more than 70 years. Alice Seaman died peacefully November 23, 2023.

Born and raised in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, Alice was the daughter of Ellen and Herbert S. Taylor. Alice was predeceased by her only brother, Herbert Jr., who was killed in World War II on Saipan while serving with the Marines. She is survived by two sons, Mark (Phyllis), of Atlanta, GA, and John (Sara), of Painter, VA; daughter, Cynthia Winer (Joseph) of Austin, TX; grandsons, Craig and Kevin Seaman; granddaughters, Lauren Haji and Rachel Simms; great-granddaughter, Kayla Winer-Winkler; two great-grandsons, Tucker and Finley Seaman; and several nieces and nephews.

Alice graduated from Fitchburg High School and the University of New Hampshire, where she was a sister of Chi Omega sorority. She earned a master's degree from the College of William and Mary. Alice led a busy life as a mother, educator, and devoted Navy wife. She taught first in Newport, Rhode Island, and later in the Norfolk Public Schools at the W.H. Taylor School. After relocating to Suffolk in 1967, she taught in the classroom and served as a reading specialist. She was then employed by the Newport News Public Schools as a psychometrist and reading consultant. Alice also taught at Tidewater Community College in the English Department. She retired from the Newport News Public Schools when her husband's career took them to England.

Alice was a lifelong member of the American Association of University Women, and she also served on the board of the Newport News Reading Council. For more than fifty years, Alice was a member of the GFWC Junto Women's Club, an international women's organization dedicated to the community through volunteer service. She served on their board in various positions, most recently as parliamentarian. Alice was also an active member of Junto's card crafters, bridge, and book clubs. She also served as a board member of the Tidewater Council of Girl Scouts.

A lifelong Episcopalian, she served as vestry register of St. Christopher's Episcopal Church. She was a member of the Episcopal Church Women of St. Christopher's and the Daughters of the King, and she served as chairman of the St. Christopher's Endowment Fund for many years. She was a member of both the church choir and the hand bell choir. As a member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Chuckatuck, Alice became the first woman to be elected to their vestry in 1970. She later served as treasurer of the church for five years during the building of the Parish Hall, and she served on the Endowment Committee and sang in the choir.

She and her husband enjoyed traveling; they visited over 35 foreign countries and territories. Her other interests included reading, letter writing, her paper-craft hobby, and spending time with her beloved children and grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 9, at 2:00 p.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church. A reception will follow in the Parish Hall. Her interment will be at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery, next to her husband. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. John's Episcopal Church. www.SturtevantFH.com
