Edison Miller Obituary

Colonel Edison Wainwright Miller, born Edward Grant Kennedy July 6, 1931 in Mills County Iowa died on November 9, 2021 at the age of 90. He was a long standing resident of Irvine, CA. Edison self described his life as anything but boring, beginning with his first five years in the Davenport, Iowa orphanage. His next thirteen years were spent in a foster home being raised by Margaret Miller-Kolarik, the second woman to be admitted to the Iowa Bar Association and the first single woman in the state to adopt children. After high school in 1949 at the age of 18 he enlisted in the US Navy. He later transitioned into the Marine Corps becoming a fighter pilot. He served an extensive 24 years in the United States Military in both the Korean and Vietnam Wars. His combat and noteworthy assignments started in Korea, 10/1952-9/1953, where he flew 53 combat missions with the 1st Marine Air Wing and served as a Forward Air Controller with the 1st Marine Division. From 1/1961-8/1963 he was assigned as a Naval Intelligence Office Liaison to the National Security Agency were he held our nation's highest security clearances. In July 1967 he was sent to Vietnam to be the Commanding Officer for an F4B Squadron, VMFA 323 Death Rattlers. In just 3 short months he flew an impressive 70 combat missions earning numerous awards. On Friday, October 13, 1967 while flying a mission over north Vietnam he was shot down. As his plane was loosing altitude he was forced to eject and sustained numerous injuries. His back was broken upon striking the planes canopy, his ankle and elbow also broken due to a hard landing caused by his parachute not fully deploying. He was captured by the Vietnamese and forced to march for 40 days to the Hanoi Hilton were he spent 5 years 4 months as the Highest Ranking Marine Corps Officer Prisoner of War. Upon his release in February of 1973, never having received medical treatment for his injuries, the Military physicians were astonished he was alive let alone walking! Which he did till the last week of his 90 years of life. For his bravery he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Purple Heart Medals of Honor. All together he received 32 combat medals and decorations. Returning to the States he retired from the Marine Corps, entering back into civilian life he attended Western State University College of Law. After passing the State Bar in 1977 he opened his own law practice specializing in family and criminal law. In 1979 he entered politics having been appointed by Governor Jerry Brown to serve as 3rd District Supervisor on the Orange County Board of Supervisors until 1981. He was in constant demand for speaking engagements, interviews and news conferences. He was more than eager to put his "Marine Corps Dress Blues" on and tell his story to all who were interested. His endurance and overall positive attitude toward life was admired by all who knew him. His altruistic nature led him to always seek ways to help those around him. He will be missed by all who knew him and remembered by all who crossed his path for his life was one of incredible circumstances that he just kept taking in stride. Survived by 8 sons Jeffrey Miller, Craig Miller, Matthew Miller, Dana Miller, Edison Blair Miller, Edward Miller, stepson Branton Ellerbee, adopted grandson Joseph Miller, and his only daughter Brittany Tharaldson; 5 grandchildren Staci Brintnell, Michelle Hilgendorf, Sean Miller, Kelly Duggins, Kristofer Miller; 15 great grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren and numerous beloved in-laws and extended families. Time to come home dear brother Your tour of duty through You've given as much as anyone Could be expected to do Just a few steps further The smoke will start to clear Others here will guide you You have no need of fear You have not failed your brothers You clearly gave it all And through your selfless actions Others will hear the call So take your place of honor Among those who have gone before And know you will be remembered For now and evermore

My Aunt Lori Archer was serving at the time, she passed some years ago. I have her scrapbook from when she was in service.

The 1st page of her scrapbook starts with Edison Miller. I thought I would share this with the family.

If any of his children or Grandchildren would like more information on what my Aunt collected I am more than happy to share.

RIP Lt. Colonel Miller. Just today, May 14, 2025, while unpacking boxes from our move from Florida to TN, August 2022, I came across the Prisoner of War bracelet baring your name and date. At the time I was a civilian working at the Navy Base at Millington TN. I proudly wore my bracelet for your years of capture. God bless your wonderful family. I know you had lots of love and respect. Bettye R Presley. Thank you Sir!

I wore the bracelet that had his name on it. It even broke in half but I taped it back together. They sent me Mia sticker then a pow sticker. My step father came to pick me up from school as we watched this awesome man walk off of the plane back in the USA. I wrote him a letter and he replied. Unfortunately moving alot thru the yrs I lost bracelet and letter but as a 13 yr old girl back then, I'll always have the wonderful memories of Lt. Col. Edison Wainwright Miller against all odds coming home. I thank him always for his service. God Bless his family

I too wore Col. Edison Miller´s POW bracelet throughout my high school years. I would love to return this treasured bracelet to Col. Miller´s family. I´ve written to the Viet Nam Veterans of America to no avail.

Rest in peace, Col. Miller. You were a true hero and patriot!

Our family met the Miller family in Kailua/ Kaneohe Hawaii the week Ed was on the way to Vietnam. My father LtCol PETE SHARPE was also a Marine pilot. It was only 3-4 months later that Ed was shot down over North Vietnam and became a POW. After Ed was released and returned to California, we took him into our home as part of his `recovery´ process. The war took a huge toll on Ed and Miller family.

Back in the earlier seventies I wore his pow bracelet for a long time. Feell Privileged to have supported him and thank him for his service. I watched him arrive back in the states aND remember how lucky I felt that mt POW was able to come home, and survived. I thought about reaching out back then, In hindsight i should have.

I remember in High school Mr. Miller came to my history class, and gave a 2 hour special guest, question and answer presentation. Mr. Miller was the father of my classmate Blair Miller in Coupeville, on Whidbey Island. This was 1994-1996.
This presentation made a lasting impression on me, especially his POW experiences at the Hanoi Hilton.
My own father is a Marine Corps Vietnam veteran, and it think Mr. Miller helped me understand my father a little more, and about a war my dad didn't talk about much.

Thank you for everything Mr. Miller.
Rest in Peace.

I wore Lt. Col. Edison Miller's POW bracelet in the early 70's. I just found it while going through an old jewelry box. If the family would like it please let me know.
My Dad was a POW in Nazi Germany for 23 months in WWII so our family knows how difficult this is for the family. My thoughts and prayers go out to all of you.

I also wore Miller´s bracelet. And we "met" via email in the early 1990s, at which point he didn´t want it. Will see if I can find it to pass along to family members, though. Condolences, all.

I only met Col. Miller late in his life, having driven him to a couple American Legion meetings at our Post 222. I can only say it was truly an honor to have been in the presence of this great man. RIP and of course, Semper Fi.

Edison Miller, a hero of mine and many others.
He was brave and strong, yet kind and loving.
He was humble and quiet, yet he knew and stood his ground for our democratic-republic.
Just like John McCain and John Kerry.
And he loved his family and his friends.
