August Wasik Obituary

August "Popeye" Wasik, 95, a lifelong resident of Cherry Valley, passed away peacefully on Friday afternoon, May 24, 2024 in his home. He was born on August 8, 1928 in Cherry Valley a son of the late John and Katie Banks Wasik. A Veteran of the United States Army, he was drafted in 1951 and re-enlisted in 1953. He served for 6 years being honorably discharged in 1957. He retired from DelFrate Packaging/ American Foods where he was a butcher. Popeye was a member of the Richard Vaux Lodge 454 F&AM and the Cherry Valley Sportsman's Club. He enjoyed farming, gardening, watching girl's softball and most of all spending time with his family. His wife, Helen Ginosky Wasik passed away on December 22, 1998. He is survived by his son and caregiver Ronald Wasik and wife Joan of Cherry Valley; daughters, Jessica Cook of Cherry Valley and Marjorie Cook Wasik and husband Thomas of Hickory; nine grandchildren Rhonda McAlpine, Thomas Wasik, Chris Wasik, John Delich, Kathy Cook, Steven Cook, Matthew Cook, Michael Wasik and Cody Wasik; 11 great- grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Floyd Cook; brothers, John, Stanley, Edward, Marion, Walter, Leroy, Paul, Joe and Adam; and two sisters, Helen and Sophie. Family and friends will be received from 2 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday May 29, 2024 in Slater Funeral & Cremation Services, Inc of Burgettstown, 73 Highland Avenue, Burgettstown, PA 15021 where a Masonic Service will conclude visitation at 6 p.m. A Catholic Blessing Service officiated by the Rev. David Perry will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday May 30, 2024 in the funeral home. He will be laid to rest, with full military honors accorded by the United States Army and the Slovan V.F.W. Honor Guard, beside his wife in Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made in his memory to the Alzheimer's Association.
