Rabbi Benjy Forester
April 9, 2025
To the Goldin family,
My name is Rabbi Benjy Forester. In 2021-2022 while studying at the Jewish Theological Seminary, I was connected with Jay, and we became study partners. I´d take the bus to his apartment once a week, and we´d study Talmud together. He´d always have his book open to the right page, and have a glass of water and some nuts ready for me. We had amazing conversations, and he was always so proud of his Jewish background, from the European yeshiva where his father studied as a boy, to his participation in the JTS high school program when he was a teen. It was clear that through his storied career, he always carried his Jewish values with him. As a young rabbinical student, I found Jay´s passion for learning infectious and inspiring. I always looked forward to our time together.
I´m not sure why, but I thought of my time with Jay recently and wanted to reach out and wish him a happy Passover. I was so sad to see that he passed last year.
I hope his memory is always for a blessing.
Sincerely,
Benjy

Dear Diana : I was waiting in a doctor's office in Monterey and Patsy Schuelte walked in for her appt and she mentioned that Jay had passed on.
I had trouble sleeping last night as I kept thinking about Jay and so many special times we spent together in Law school and how sad I am that
we never got to share our lives and families and life's adventures.
Jay has a special place in my life and I can never forget the night that Jay,
Zane and I drove to NY from New Haven to attend Emory Harper's
engagement party at the Union Club in NY and the subsequent
eventful wedding at the bride's home in Short Hills . It was one of the
funniest and at the same time sad examples of how anti semitism was
practiced at the most refined levels of NY society . Did Jay ever share that
experience ?
I miss him and wanted you to know how special our time together
was and how much having him my life has meant to me.

I am a Princeton classmate of Jay's and am deeply saddened by his death. He and I sat next to each other in a number of History classes, and we saw each other at major reunions. I commend his successful political career and public service as an attorney. On behalf of myself personally and the Class of 1957 Caring Committee, I extend our sincere sympathy to Diana and the family.

Dear Diana, Daniel, Matthew & Jonathan & family: Jay Goldin was like a teacher, boss, guide, editor later on a friend & mentor. I learned so much from him (& sometimes from his dad, Dr. Harry Goldin a'h). Jay, Heshy Jacob & I would often visit with Rebbes & Jewish leaders. Jay & I even flew to Wash DC to meet with then Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger to take him to task for not sending US soldiers injured in Lebanon to Israeli hospitals. We tackled Board of Estimate votes & community board issues. We often talked about his speeches to various groups. The rare photo of me speaking with him in attendance (above) gave me the chance to ask him for a good quote just before I got up to speak. We'll never forget your visit to our Catskills bungalow in 1989 & how great our shmoozes always were. May his precious neshama have an aliyah & bring forth good things for our globe & families. Every good wish, Willie & Judy & family
