G. MACEWEN Obituary

MacEWEN--Dr. G. Dean. Dr. G. Dean MacEwen, a trailblazer in pediatric orthopedic surgery, passed away on August 6, 2024, at age 96. Born on a dairy farm in Metcalfe, Canada, Dr. MacEwen earned his medical degree at Queen's University and completed his orthopedic residency at the Campbell Clinic in Memphis, TN. He joined Nemours Children's Hospital in 1958, where he revolutionized pediatric orthopedics through his research, teaching, and leadership. Dr. MacEwen's notable contributions include the development and modification of devices to treat scoliosis and congenital hip dysplasia, which continue to benefit patients today. He was also instrumental in establishing screening protocols for hip dysplasia in newborns and scoliosis in school children, improving early diagnosis and treatment outcomes. Dr. MacEwen was a charter member and president of multiple orthopedic societies, including the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America (POSNA) and the Scoliosis Research Society (SRS). His research output was prolific, with 145 publications to his name, many of which have become seminal works in the field of orthopedic surgery. His influence extended globally through his establishment of the International Pediatric Orthopaedic Research Fellowship, mentoring countless surgeons worldwide. He is survived by his beloved wife of 70 years, Marilyn, and their five children, nine grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 11am on October 19, 2024, at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Wilmington, DE. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Dr. G. Dear Lynn,
Ollie and I extend our deepest sympathy to you and your family on the death of Dean.
We both fondly remember you and Dean during your time here in New Orleans.
We are still living on Calhoun St. Ollie suffered a brain stem stroke in 2014, and continued to teach until he had other health problems. He doesn´t get out very much, but is still here. Best, Karen and Ollie Edmunds
