Dolores Marie Ables Steinhilber Obituary

Dolores Marie Ables Steinhilber, age 93, resident of Waldorf, MD, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on June 27, 2025. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, she perpetuated the strong bloodline and legacy of her late mother Marie Ables. She also was preceded in death by her devoted husband and lifetime love, August William Steinhilber, Jr., and her sister Shirley Yelavich. She leaves to cherish her memory her three children, August William (Teresa) Steinhilber, III, Lisa Leadbeater-Brame (Jerome Brame), and Paula Beran; as well as grandchildren David (Tammy) Leadbeater, Tara (Michael) Pagano, August William Steinhilber, IV, Jennifer Steinhilber, Annemarie Beran, Russell Steinhilber and Robert Beran, Jr.; great-grandchildren Cheyenne Leadbeater, Kaiden and Ian Graff and Piper Pagano; and devoted nieces and nephews.
Having received undergraduate and master's degrees from Case Western Reserve University, Dolores devoted her life to faith, family, and education. A lifelong Roman Catholic, she was a parishioner at St. Joseph and St. Philip the Apostle churches and held many important roles within the Archdiocese of Washington DC, including teacher, vice principal, Director of Religious Education, Assistant to the Pastor, and founder of Special Religious Education (SPRED) programs. Generations of students felt her compassion and commitment in every lesson taught.
Known affectionately as "Nana Buck," her signature inclusion of a $2 bill with each card on special occasions was her way of marking love with a smile. She was a prayer warrior, a steadfast supporter of her family, and a pillar of faith to caregivers and countless community members. She dedicated herself to the Church, her students, and family and will be remembered as a devoted mother, grandmother, and teacher who deeply treasured her family and numerous students. She also opened her heart to caregivers for whom her family is extremely grateful. Throughout her life, everyone who had the honor of knowing Nana Buck/Mrs. S loved her for her forceful yet compassionate spirit with a huge heart.
Visitation will occur July 11, 2025, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Raymond Funeral Service, 5635 Washington Ave, La Plata, MD 20646. On July 12, 2025, starting at 9:30 a.m., there will be another short visitation at St. Philip the Apostle Church, 5416 Henderson Way, Camp Springs, MD 20746 followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. Thereafter, there will be a graveside service at Resurrection Cemetery, 8000 Woodyard Rd, Clinton, MD 20735. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, the Pat Summitt Foundation, Guiding Eyes for the Blind, or St. Jude’s Children's Research.
