Helen (Sochie's Mom) was when we were in 4th grade on up. When she was going out on a date, she would get all dressed up in a cool pretty mama look. That's what I remember along with her sense of humor!

I have many memories of Aunt Helen. It was always a treat to see her at family functions when we were older teenagers and also in our early twenties. She would always compliment my parents on what a great job they did with raising my siblings and me. She says that we were always respectful towards her even though she was no longer married to our Uncle Manuel. I would tell her that SHE is family and that we will always love her! She said that she feels the same.

She would sometimes go back in time and tell me how it was a better time and so many years ago when my parents would get together with her and my Uncle Manuel when they were younger. How the family always visited one another at each other's homes. Aunt Virginia's house was the meeting place, I think. She said my parents were so in love and such a wonderful couple and always so good to her. She also really enjoyed seeing Uncle Richard and Aunt Jerry from Colorado.

Aunt Helen loved to hear about my job and always reminded me to be a strong and independent woman and never let anyone walk over me. She always asked about my parents and my siblings. She cared and that is what means a lot to me. That the Miller family was so huge, but she always loved and respected my parents and the Nieto side of the family equally.

My mother-in-law Helen was the first person to inspire me to become a hairdresser. She loved me as a daughter, and I miss her.
Helen loved her family and extended family. She always hugged me and called me Mija when she had something important to say. She was a strong, focused and loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
with love,
Theresa

I remember (Helen, Ernestine, Virginia and Me) we would get all dressed up and go the Hickey Ballroom in Oakland to dance. It was right across the street from the Bell Theatre. We mostly went on a Saturday night. Ernestine was the only one who had a license to drive. She would get so frustrated because we would have to drive around until we found parking in the huge parking lot.
We danced all into the night until 1am. Then we would go out to eat breakfast before heading home. We had a lot of fun times together when we went dancing! We danced to Latin music (corridos) and also once in a while they played big band music that made you dance the jitterbug. They also had slow ballads to dance to.
I also remember that a large group of us Ernestine, Helen, Manuel, Vera, Virginia and me would pile in cars and drive to Half Moon Bay and sit on the beach. We would get in the water and go swimming or get close to the water, for those who didn't want to swim. We would then open our picnic baskets or BBQ hot dogs and hamburgers and have so much fun together. Cousin Frank would bring his guitar and we would all sing songs. Then other people from the beach would join our group and sing along with us. We had the best times!
Love Carmen Salaiz (Sister-in-law)
