Frank Johndrow Obituary

Frank Johndrow
Frank Johndrow, 87, of Vernon, beloved husband of Nancy Johndrow died peacefully in his home on Sunday, September 15, 2024.
Frank was born in Stafford Springs, CT and was the oldest child of Roland and Mae Johndrow. He grew up in Stafford Springs where he excelled in basketball and baseball, and he earned the name Guts. When he completed high school, he went onto Eastern Connecticut Teachers College in Willimantic. During college he was class Vice President and Co-Captain of the basketball team. Frank was active in all aspects of college life; this is also where he met Nancy, his future wife.
Frank and Nancy were married in 1960 and moved to Vernon, CT where they became teachers. Frank continued his education receiving his master's degree from Eastern Connecticut College and his 6th year certificate in education administration from Central Connecticut College. He spent 35 years teaching in the Vernon School System, mostly at Center Road School where he had a positive impact on many generations of children.
Frank loved to play, coach and referee all types of sports. Some of his favorite sports were basketball, baseball, soccer, skiing, golf, tennis and fishing (basically anything). Frank was the President of the Manchester Board of Umpires from 1979 to 1980 and President of the Central Connecticut Soccer Officials from 1987 to 1989. He was inducted into the Eastern Connecticut State University Athletic Hall of Fame in October 1998.
After retiring from education, he worked for his son Tom for many years. Frank was a loving father and always proud of Tom and his grandchildren Elizabeth and Matthew. He was affectionately known as "Pop" to his grandchildren and great granddaughter Lucy Rose.
He will be missed by his family, friends and the many children that passed through the doors of Center Road School.
Frank is survived by his wife Nancy, son Tom and his wife Kathryn, grandchildren Elizabeth and her husband Trevor, Matthew and his fiancé Amanda, and great-granddaughter Lucy Rose. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Ken.
All are welcome to join the family for calling hours at the Ladd-Turkington & Carmon Funeral Home, 551 Talcottville Road in Vernon on Sunday, September 22, 2024, from 2 pm - 4 pm. I had Mr. Johndrow for 5th grade social studies at Center Rd school in 1974-1975. I live in Worcester, MA now and I am now a high school social studies teacher. It was in his class that I discovered both that I loved history and I did well in it. I remembered how eager I was to do well in that class, to have his approval. His impact on my life has survived for 50 years. And may you know that though his presence will be missed, he will remain alive in our memories and his legacy will survive into the generations. May his memory be a blessing.
