Arthur was born on June 12, 1930, in Humboldt Township, Ill., to the late William and Magdalena (Blume) ZuHone. Beloved husband of the late Charlotte M. (Ottilie) ZuHone, he is survived by two sons, Daniel ZuHone and wife Shelley, of Mattoon, Ill., and Douglas ZuHone and wife Laura, of Mattoon, Ill.; four grandchildren, John ZuHone and wife Jessi, of Quincy, Mass.; Megan Lakemacher and husband Justin, of Shakopee, Minn.; Caroline ZuHone, of Carmel, Ind., and Mary ZuHone, of St. Louis, Mo.; three great-grandchildren, William ZuHone and Audrey ZuHone, of Quincy, Mass., and Ryland Lakemacher of Shakopee, Minn. He is also preceded in death by one infant son, John William; one grandson, Kirk ZuHone; two brothers, William ZuHone and Harry ZuHone; and one sister, Dorothy Hurst.
A lifelong farmer, Art grew up on the family farm and then continued the tradition as his own vocation. Farming was more than an occupation for Art, it was a calling, from which he never really retired.
After serving as a marine in the Korean War and being awarded the Purple Heart, as well as medals for Korean Service and United Nations Service, Art returned to Coles County in 1953, and for nearly 70 years, he and his wife, Charlotte, worked side-by-side in the farming business, while raising their two sons in the rural life they loved.
Art cherished deep and enduring friendships, and he and Charlotte were known for hosting many festive gatherings with their friends over the years. Their social life extended to Florida, where their annual winter trek became a tradition, visiting with old and new friends who they always enjoyed. Many more memories he treasured, were made at their place on Lake Mattoon, where family and friends gathered for boating, skiing, Charlotte's cooking and lots of laughs.
Art was a faithful member of St. John's Lutheran Church, and previously, for many years, St. Paul's Lutheran Church, where he was baptized, confirmed and married. His faith was always a part of his life, and he held many roles in the church over the years, including that of Elder and Trustee. Faith, family and farming were the values Art held steadfast and to which he dedicated his life.
Memorials in his honor may be made to St. John's Lutheran School, 100 Broadway Avenue, Mattoon, IL or St. John's Lutheran Church, 200 Charleston Avenue, Mattoon, Ill., 61938.
