Charles Hood Obituary

SHELBYVILLE - Charles Jesse Hood, 64, of Shelbyville, died at 12:00 noon on Friday, April 22, 2011 in Danville Veterans Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 26, 2011 at Oak Grove Baptist Church, Oakland, IL with Rev. Robert Lee officiating. Visitation from 5:00-8:00 p.m. Monday at Howe and Yockey Funeral Home, Shelbyville and one hour before services Tuesday at the church. Burial will be at Oak Grove Cemetery, Oakland, IL with military rites by the Shelby County Honor Guard. Memorials may be given to Pride Packages in Shelbyville. Mr. Hood was born on September 24, 1946 in Paris, Illinois, the son of Levi Anderson and Eva Emmaline Homann Hood. He was a graduate of Oakland High School in the Class of 1964. Charles then served in the U. S. Army during the Vietnam War. When he returned from the service, he attended Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, graduating in 1971. He later earned his Masters Degree from SIU in Agri-Science. Charles taught high school agriculture and industrial arts at Milford, Ramsey and Tower Hill. He then was a rural mail carrier for ten years. He later worked for CF Industries in Cowden, IL, retiring in 2002. Charles was a Precinct Committeeman for the Republican Party, an Election Official for Lakewood Precinct and an avid supporter of the troops. He married Sheryl Lynn Starwalt on June 14, 1969 in Hidalgo, IL. Surviving are his wife, Sheryl; three children, Laura Uphoff, Jesse Hood and Richard Hood all of Shelbyville; brother, Raymond Hood of Lipan, TX; sisters, Mary Jo Avilla of Orland Hills, IL, Helen Franklin of Bethany, IL, Betty Kellams of Scott City, MO, Paula Jarrett of Mahomet, IL and Dorothy Hancock of Milwaukee, WI; and three grandchildren, Zachary and Adam Uphoff and Brieanna Lenz.
