Walter G. "Walt" Gliem Jr., 73, of Biglerville, Pa., passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his family on Saturday, Aug. 17, 2024.
Born in Pottsville, on Aug. 10, 1951, he was the son of the late Walter G. and Audrey (Schaeffer) Gliem.
Walt is survived by his wife of 49 years as of Aug. 16, Janet L. (Reichardt) Gliem. He was a 1969 graduate of Pottsville High School and earned a degree from Rider Technical Institute of Allentown, in 1971.
Walt had been employed by the FBI in Washington, D.C., from 1972 thru 1974 before moving to Gettysburg to assist the Gettysburg College Safety and Security Department from 1974 – 1978. Beginning in late 1978, Walt served with the Borough of Gettysburg Police Department for the next 30 years until his retirement in 2007. In his retirement years, he had worked part-time for Jacoby Transportation and later for the Arendtsville Elementary School.
He was an avid Penn State fan and loved his Philadelphia sports teams, Phillies, Eagles and 76ers. Walt enjoyed the outdoors, gardening, hunting and photography.
Walt was predeceased by two grandchildren, Chloe Gliem and Cameron Gliem and his brother-in-law, Peter LaBarbera.
In addition to his wife, Walt is survived by his three children, Wade Gliem (Stephanie), of Gettysburg, Jared Gliem (Sarah), of Linglestown, and Abby English (Phillip), of Lewisberry, five grandchildren, Collin Ramsey, Elizabeth Gliem, Logan Gliem, Aidan Gliem and Lucille English, a sister, Gail LaBarbera, of Myerstown, two brothers, Bryon Gliem and Jeffrey Gliem (Annette), both of Pottsville.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 22, 2024, at the Monahan Funeral Home in Gettysburg followed by a memorial service at 4 p.m. Interment will be private.
